Location: Clintonville, WI | This is the initial thread to start us off and it covers a lot of ground. READ THIS THREAD THOROUGHLY. The rules and requirements have evolved over time and most everything in here is what it is because of past questions / issues. Get a team set up per the rules and get ready to fish
__________________________________________________________________
First……TACKLE INDUSTRIES and SUICK are our sponsors for MatchFishing 2017. Thank you, TI and Suick!!! Your involvement is much appreciated. There will be more to come ahead about these sponsors as we progress throughout the season.
___________________________________________________________________
Participation is FREE, and there is a short list of requirements:
1. MuskieFirst has sole discretion, at any time, over all aspects of MatchFishing, including but not limited to rules decisions, competition set-up, exceptions, prize offering and prize distribution.
2. The group expects a commitment to participate in all respects – if you sign up, you better fish.
3. You must have the ability to provide me with digital pictures of your results
4. Respect the spirit of the event. The idea of MatchFishing is to incent getting out on the water with friends/family, to have fun and to have friendly competition.
5. Don’t cheat.
6. Don’t be “Richards” to MuskieFirst, your opponents, others on the water, property owners, the DNR, me……..you get the picture.
7. You must have your sign-up message posted by 11:59 pm on April 28, 2017.
8. MuskieFirst reserves the right to limit, alter, change or otherwise adjust the number of entries, in any way MuskieFirst deems necessary, to accommodate competition set-up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RULES
Teams:
A team consists of one or two fishermen. If two, you must fish with each other from one boat or shore at the same time. Teams may not consist of three anglers at any time, under any circumstances. If one of the team members is unavailable, a substitute may fill in, but one of the people fishing must be a team member.
Professional fishing guides are welcome to participate as competitors in MatchFishing with their own team, but teams may not hire a paid guide as a substitute team member. In this thread, please post a reply with the following:
• team name
• names of team members
• City & State of each team member
*** email me your full addresses separately
• Cell phone #s for each member
• e-mail for each member
• required two dates (minimum) for fishing availability.
I am asking for permission to share cell #s and email addresses of all the teams so you may contact each other for scheduling, cancellations and any other necessary MatchFishing communication. Please provide me with your permission to do so in your sign-up responses. Do not abuse this information!
___________________________________________________________________
Matches:
Whether it be pool play or some other structure I come up with, this will be determined by how many teams sign up. There will be a “regular season” from which the results will determine “playoff” teams. Again, the playoff structure will be determined by the initial number of teams entered.
A match consists of two teams fishing against each other ON THE SAME DAY. Teams may fish different waters, but all fishing by both teams must take place between 12:00 am and 11:59 pm on the day of the scheduled match. For example…..A team on vacation at LOTW can fish against their opponent who is on vacation on Mille Lacs as long as it is on the same day.
As mentioned, you do not have to fish from a boat. If you are fishing solo, it is what it is. If you and your partner are fishing from shore 1) You and your partner must fish within 50 yds of each other 2) If you are on a dammed body of water of any kind, you both must fish the same section i.e. one can not be above a dam while the other fishes below the dam, even if within 50 yds of each other.
You do not have to fish a set or minimum amount of time within the match date and time parameters.
Each team has until 12:00 pm (noon) the day after their match to submit photos and results. When you report in, your message must include the photo(s), length of fish caught, your team name, the date of your match and who your opponent is. The date/time received on my cell phone and/or email will be the official record so make sure you send them as soon as you can after your match. Teams failing to report results by the deadline will not be given points for any fish they may have caught that day. No exceptions. I will place results and images in the 2017 MatchFishing thread as my time permits. DO NOT POST YOUR OWN RESULTS anywhere! They will not be accepted. Photos and results must be sent to:
Mike Morse (BigMo)
[email protected]
cell: (920) 213-0898
For back-up purposes only, Slamr can accept match info for me if I will be unavailable for an extended period of time. I will let you know in advance if I will be unavailable and when you should connect with Slamr. Otherwise, do not send him match info or try to get items from him.
Andrew Golden
[email protected]
(847) 989-9271
No rematches are allowed during the “regular season.” Each match will be scored according to the results on the day of the match: win, lose, or tie.
___________________________________________________________________
Scheduling:
As long as you are fishing water on or after its seasonal opening date, matches can begin at Midnight May 6, 2017 and must conclude by 11:59 pm August 31, 2017.
When each team signs up, they are required to provide two days during each of the months of June/July/August that they expect they will be available to fish a match to help get going. Teams will not be entered into MatchFishing until they provide these dates. If there is a match date agreed upon, the match will take place on that day unless both teams agree to change it. Things come up, we are all busy…..please communicate with each other ahead of time if you will not be able to fish a scheduled date. All agreed upon matches must be posted in the MatchFishing thread or emailed to me with both team names and the date to be fished.
If one of the teams is a “no-show” on a match date, the match still counts. The absent team will receive 0 points. Please be flexible and do everything you can to schedule matches and honor the commitments, or communicate with other teams for rescheduling. 90+ days should be more than enough to get Pool matches in. There were some issues in the past with anglers that had an odd schedule for work and/or life; for example, those that are able to fish a lot from Mondays-Thursdays. Everyone has to be flexible and put the effort into making the scheduling work. Again, 90+ days should be sufficient to make the “regular season” work.
____________________________________________________________________
Items:
Once a match is scheduled, teams will be assigned an item of some sort. This item must be visible in a picture taken with any qualifying muskies they catch on the day of the match. We will try to make it unique and interesting. I am your source of the items. I will have record of all the properly posted match dates and will provide items via MuskieFirst, text, e-mail or cell call no sooner than the day before the match. Items will not be given out early under any circumstance. Failure to include the item in the photograph disqualifies that fish from scoring points. No exceptions.
** Last resort, if you can’t get your item due to unforeseen circumstances, the default options are:
1. Get a local newspaper where you are fishing. Have the front page visible in any fish photos. Let me know what paper it is in case I can’t tell form the photo.
2. If both of you are fishing and each have a cell phone, have one of the phones on the date/time screen and include it in the photo.
____________________________________________________________________
Scoring:
• Minimum size of 35”
o 35” = 5 points
o every 1” above that earns 1 point
o any ½” is rounded up
Additional Points Available Per Match for “regular season”:
• Point total of fish length for each team
• + 2 points to the winning team or + 1 point for each team if there is a tie with fish point totals
• + 1 point for each team being on the water for the match (verified by photos with the item)
• 0 points for losing a match due to non-participation
The reason we score this way is 1) the fish point method is a common tournament method 2) it will help determine playoff seeding 3) it will provide potential tiebreaker(s) information for later rounds
In the event of a tie in “regular season” as it relates to determining playoff involvement, the tie-breaker will be largest fish caught during pool play.
____________________________________________________________________
Playoff Rounds:
Each team making the “playoffs” will likely be seeded according to their FISH POINT total from the “regular season”. #1 will fish head-to-head versus the lowest seed, #2 will fish head-to-head versus the second lowest seed, and so on..... The first Playoff Round clock will begin at Midnight on September 1, 2017. These matches must be completed by 11:59 pm on September 30, 2017.
The winners of the Playoff Round(s) will eventually advance to the Championship. The Championship period is Midnight October 1, 2017 through 11:59 pm on October 31, 2017.
***If the number of teams dictates, we would fish into November to determine a champ.
During the playoff rounds and championship, rematches will be allowed in the case of ties until one team wins. If neither team is able to win a match before the end of the time allowed, total Fish Points from all qualified matches will determine the winner. If total fish points are a tie, the largest fish caught during all rounds
determines the winner.

Location: Clintonville, WI | There are 16 teams committed at this point. Many familiar names/teams and some new ones too!
16 is good for bracket format and I can work with 17 in the same format as 2016. Otherwise, we need to get to 20 or 24.
Hard deadline is 11:58 pm this Friday night.
** If the number of entrants ends up being difficult to work with in terms of setting up pools, I will likely go with first come - first served. Which means.....I could have to cut out later entries. So, if you are interested, get your commitment in to me ASAP. |

** To the Calcutta Clips, please post cell #s and email addresses.
We can work well with 20 teams.......but that is not to deter anyone else from signing up. Just know if there are other entries coming, we will need to get to 24 teams to make the format viable. Let's make that happen.
If you have been thinking about MatchFishing, go for it and sign up here. If you know others that might be interested, let them know. |

Last entry took us to 21 teams. I have to find a way to make an odd # work or make the tough call to eliminate the last team.
For those that are able and want to fish Saturday, I'll try to get you enough time to make calls/contact your potential opponents for a match. |

Location: Clintonville, WI | Here we go......21 teams in. Odd # of teams so I elected to deviate from the bracket format (until the playoffs), similar to last year. Attached are the teams with contact information, a grid of each team with their opponents and a playoff bracket template.
Each team has four opponents/matches. No team should have more than four, no two teams have the same four opponents. I've gone over this three times so It should be good. If anyone notices anything different than this, let me know.
Top 8 teams by points will advance to the playoffs and be seeded according to their points. Quarterfinals will be in September, Semis in October and Final in November. *** If matches get completed early in ANY ROUND, we will move up the timeline and allow the next round to commence as son as the prior round is over, no matter what month it is.
ALL OTHER RULES AND REQUIREMENTS AS OUTLINED IN THE INITIAL POST APPLY.
Matches may begin Midnight 5/6/17 where open season/regs allow. When a match is agreed upon, email or text me with team names and date.
Rosewood & Taggart are ready. Bring it on. HAVE FUN!

Your photo item choices are a trophy, a 45 or 33 vinyl record, a lamp shade.
Both teams should also have a text at 7:53 this morning with the items.
Fish hard, have fun, good luck.

If you're going to include the Macho Man in your trophy photo, there MUST be a photo of Miss Elizabeth as well, right?!? You can't have one without the other.
A lamp shade on the boat deck next to the angler(s) would have been fine but GoFishn nailed THE way to manifest the lamp shade option for photo items. 1000 phantom points to GoFishn for reading my mind.

Beef Supreme stuck a 43 incher to get RamRod who blanked on 6/3/17.
Team Olson vs. Rosewood & Taggart was a double blank tie on 6/4/17.
** Don't forget to submit photos of you and the item, whether you catch fish or not. It gets you 1 point in the event of a tie. That is a potential 4 points that could affect a playoff appearance or not. Why do I bring this up? I forgot to take such a photo and unless my partner remembered and sends me a picture, we're SOL for the point in our first match.

Muskie Hound's four fish - 48.5" 44.5" 37.5" 49.5 - beat Gerry's Girls Gone Wild's 46.5"

Location: Waukee, IA | I may have had a typo in my initial email, my first fish was 48" not 48.5", I distinctly remember because it tied my pb. I've never had a day like Saturday before. Definitely giving credit to the weather, the fish were everywhere. Ryan's big one was the most savage figure 8 strike I've ever seen. |

Location: Waukee, IA | Thanks, I'm way cautious about measurements and don't want to exaggerate my numbers. Ryan's fish was actually 50" if we would have pinched the tail but the fish was going nuts in the boat so we got it back in the lake ASAP. |

Straight Cash Homies stuck three fish to out pace Team Outdoor First and their goose egg.
My plan is now clearly to squeak into playoffs and hope everyone else uses all their powder in qualifying and then we get hot.

Location: Clintonville, WI | More MatchFishing action this past weekend with Team Olson battling GoFishn and Team McKinney taking on Rainy Days.
Looks like Team Olson fished a private lake but blanked to a tie with GoFishn.
Rainy Days stuck a 35.5 incher before storms hit them and that held on to best Team McKinney.
To all teams, don't forget (like Rosewood & Taggart did) to get a photo of your team on the water with one of the items and send it to me. Even if you don't catch a fish or win the match, those potential four points could mean advancing to the playoffs or not.

If you will be in an area with no cell reception or internet access, you may not get the text or see the items here.
The preference is for you to see and use the items chosen for purposes of silliness and fun. But, if you can't access them, the rules allow you to use a cell phone home screen with date/time on it. Take a photo of the fish with cell phone showing and then a close up of the phone if you need to . Send both to me when you can.

Brad, thanks for the Calcutta Clippers update. Anything from the GoFishn boys?
If anyone is having trouble setting up matches, let me know. We'll have to give it a bit more time for teams to work out matches.
But, If we get to 8/14 with matches not scheduled yet, those who need to fish matches should contact me and I'll give them an alternative. |

8/13/17 Tretsven got 4 that measured vs. RamRod
The total points situation is posted herein, as is the team grid showing all teams that have matches to schedule (and who those match opponents must be). THESE DO NOT SHOW UP AS PHOTOS. YOU NEED TO OPEN THE ATTACHMENTS BELOW THE FISH PHOTOS.
*** Anyone that has tried to set up dates before 8/31/17 with their stated opponents but have not been successful (the reason does not matter at this point), text or Private Message me the opponents you need to cover and what dates you'll be fishing. I have not been able to get a few matches their photo item choices a day in advance (such as for Gerry's Girls Gone Wild vs Team McKinney today). I appreciate everyone's buy in for the photo items and also everyone's awareness to use their cell phone date screen or the day's newspaper if they don't get items from me.
For anyone who still needs matches scheduled and just can't make it work with their remaining opponents, let me know when you can fish. I'll send you items the day before and you can fish against a "phantom" opponent.

Location: Clintonville, WI | I have one correction/match update.......Team Rainy Days stuck a 49" vs Team Handlin 8/19/17 (how do I miss that one?!). Conklyn is either wearing a bra underneath or it's on the deck and his partner f'ed up the photo.
Other results:
The Beefers (aka muskie whisperers) four fish beat Lake Country's blank 8/26/17
Lake Country vs Rainy Days both blanked on 8/27/17
Team Kamo vs Big Red Buffalo both blanked on 8/29/17
Lake Country stuck two versus Handlin's blank on 8/29/17.......these two fish made a run at the last playoff spot and it went down to the second tiebreaker, not in their favor
RamRod vs Team OFM both blanked on 8/30/17
There had to be some "editing" done for the Lake Country photo versus Rainy Days so that is an attachment which did not show up as a photo. Looked like it was a frustrating day based on that photo.
It appears all matches that will be fished are completed. There is technically one match left but it is not even scheduled. So, also attached are the complete point totals, playoff teams and playoff brackets. **please check the scores and make sure my records match yours. There is time to update but it would have to be before midnight tonight or my results are official.
First rounds of playoffs may start at midnight tonight.

Location: Clintonville, WI | Two quarterfinals are in the books...........and the winners are:
Beef Supreme's 37.5 incher beat Team McKinney's blank.
Muskie Hound's 35 and 36.5 inchers beat Rainy Days. A shorty for Rainy Days caused a bit of excitement for a brief moment, I'm sure, but just doesn't make the grade.
Tretsven vs Straight Cash Homies is scheduled for 9/24/17.
Gerry's Girls Gone Wild vs Fargo Yacht Club is pending.

Location: Clintonville, WI | Quarterfinal #3 from 9/24/17:
Team Tretsven takes out Straight Cash Homies. Tretsven landed a 37" fish and 42.5" fish to get the job done against Homie's skunk.
The last quarterfinal, between Gerry's Girls Gone Wild vs Fargo Yacht Club, is scheduled for 9/30/17.
So far, results have stayed true to the seeding with all the higher seeds prevailing thus far. Can Gerry's Girls Gone Wild keep up the trend or will Fargo YC crash the party?

Location: Clintonville, WI | The last quarter-final match is tomorrow (hopefully with a rematch day on Sunday if necessary) between Gerry's Girls Gone Wild and Fargo Yacht Club.
Their photo item choices for tomorrow are:
a coupon, harmonica or other small musical instrument, fast food breakfast wrapper
Good luck! |

Location: Clintonville, WI | Looks like Beef Supreme vs Muskie Hound semi-final is in pencil for Saturday 10/7.
Quarter-final between Gerry's Girls Gone Wild and Fargo Yacht Club was a 2x double blank tie last weekend. Reschedule set for 10/10 with backup date 10/11. Winner will meet Tretsven.
*** For those remaining teams, please start planning now for any remaining matches you may end up having. Be prepared with scheduling options for any opponents you may face.
Weather may cooperate to fish into well into November but I wouldn't want to leave that to chance if we can get done in late Oct. early Nov. |

Yep, pretty much any tournament we enter. If there is an entry fee, we’re screwed. |

Location: Clintonville, WI | On 11/24/17, there were four sane people who escaped the rat race of Black Friday and fished.
WE HAVE A 2017 WINNER. And the winner is........Gerry's Girls Gone Wild! GGGW stuck a 44.5 incher to sneak past Beef Supreme's 43 incher.
Editor's note: I'd like to find Beef Supreme's fish in a few years!
Congrats to both teams and the crowning of a new champ. I will be working with Slamr and our title sponsors, Suick and Tackle Industries, on prizes. Both final teams confirm your addresses with me please, via text or email.
