Hi all,

I just bought a new Bird Helix 10 mega chirp SI gps combo g2n, I need some help on where to mount this transducer on my 01 ranger 681vs. Also do I need a 2nd 2D transducer ? or does the transducer that it came with work for all types of sonar 2D,SI,DI? Thanks for the help.

I just bought a Lowrance HDS12/HDS9 combo, with Totalscan, and the one transducer pretty much handles it all. It would appear that it's the same for your Humminbird, according to what I'm seeing here:

http://www.humminbird.com/Products/HELIX-10-CHIRP-MEGA-SI-GPS-G2N/

As for mounting the transducer, I've seen people do it several ways. I was into (Ranger dealer) Pamp's here in Green Bay last week, and they seem to mount the transducer right ahead of the skeg, on the back of the transom.

Looks as though the transducer would be out of the water on plane? does it read at high speed?

I don't think it would actually--at least the SI portion of the signal. I think there would be too much interference from all the turbulence. But I would think that the transducer is still in the water, so the down-scan (ordinary sonar) would probably still work.

Up hi like that is how I have mine. It will not read anything while on plane. But that transducer is large and very expensive. If you must have on plane 2d sonar it must be lower. But with GPS maps it's capable of it is much more usefull than sonar telling you it's 3' deep at 30 mph or 75 like my boat.

Yup. The package I just bought on eBay last night has both the SI transducer, and one for 83/200 Hz as well--so I'll mount that one lower if I can figure out a way to do it without obstructing the SI signal. I plan to install the electronics myself, but will look for someone here in the Green Bay area who does installations, and hire them to give me a few tips maybe. Or maybe just hire them to help me--I want to be involved with the install, so I know how/where everything is all installed...and I want to be the one to decide where things get installed.

The humminbird mega si comes with all in one transducer.. but sounds like it wont work for regular sonar if you are on plane. might have to buy another 83/200 and glass it in the hull.

Transducer saver shield makes a trolling motor transducer bracket that can be used to mount the ducer to the underside of the step. I installed mine that way and it's solid as a rock with great sonar readings. I also installed a thru-hull transducer and a Y cable to accommodate the high speed reading on my 681. It works very well.

I'll put up some pics tonight of the Lowrance side scan transducer on my '01 681. Mounted it on the step. I also glassed in the 2D transducer to shoot through the hull under the battery compartment. No interference for me, and good side scan.

Alright Thanks Riverrat351 I appreciate it, I would hate to start drilling holes in my transom and then have to move the sensor.. Also how do you go about installing a glassed in 2D sensor? i'm thinking i'll need one for when the boat is on plane.

I have not used this product but I will if I change my xducer set-up. I have read good things from the boys on BBC forum. Stern Saver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciy1najrIFE

Here is the location I mounted mine, after getting some advice from others on this site.
Here is a link to another thread about side scan transducer placement;

And my original thread when I did it;

And here is one about shoot through hull transducer placement;

Lots of knowledgeable people on this site, I'm sure others may chime in. Use the search function and dig back a few years and you might find more info.

The structure scan is meant for slow boat speed. It should read as long as you're not on plane. Maybe up to 6-8 mph.

The Side imaging transducer that comes with a MEGA SI unit will read 2D/DI/SI. However, all large SI transducers will loose contact with the bottom at high speed, while on plane due to an air pocket developing under the transducer. Some people will try to tilt the back of transducer down one or two notches to eliminate this air pocket, but will sacrifice the image quality and depth accuracy of the unit in doing so. The correct solution is to mount your MEGA transducer level so that it is below the water while at off-plane speeds and utilize a two-transducer system, joined together with a Y-cable. It is okay if this location of the SI transducer is out of the water while on plane- see below.

DI and SI still come from the large standard transducer that come with the unit.
2D sonar comes from either a transom-mounted high-speed skimmer transducer (aluminum or fiberglass boats) OR a shoot-thru-the-hull high-speed transducer (fiberglass only). The Y cable will have both transducers plug into a specific side of the cable and join the signals into a single plug that goes into the back of the unit. Even if the large SI/DI transducer is out of the water while on plane, your high-speed 2D transducer will still yield your depth, as it is suited and positioned to hold bottom at these speeds.

Pics of my setup with the old style SI ducer. Transducer saver shield makes the same product for the new mega ducer. Highly recommended.
