| When you read or are told" I fish hard", what does that mean? Do you put in twelve hour days? Do you beat the crap out of your equipment? During your day,you cast thousands of times? What exactly does that statement mean? With the season coming to an end, I was wondering if I fished hard. Kdawg |

| Well, if you've ever fished with someone who doesn't, you will know the difference. Some guys are die hard about it. Cast after cast after cast, no breaks, no food, right from the figure 8 into the next cast in one motion... no sitting down anywhere except between spots. Other guys kind of take it easy. Cast for half an hour, take a break, cast for a bit, eat a sandwich...
As far as I'm concerned, beating the water to a froth is kind of silly when you're 5 hours into a 10 hour day and haven't seen a fish since this morning. I guess I fish hard, but when nothing is moving, and we've got 4 hours left? I want to make sure I am mentally and physically still worth something if the fish start going at the end of the day. |

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | My opinion on "Fishing Hard" would be something like this:
12-15 hr days of constant casting, other than moving from spot to spot...
Grab a sandwich/candy bar/food item while moving.
Fish in any and all weather..... Storms,(no lightning) rain, sleet, snow, wind, high sun, calm, and fish all the way up until Ice Up.
Throw the highest percentage lures possible, which might be Huge Bucktails, or Pounders.... or 12-14 inch Cranks... All Day.
I didn't fish all that hard this Season, because of to much Work, but I plan on hitting it HARD again next season.
I broke 1/2 inch of ice Monday to get my boat out of the water....... Would rather fish another week or two, but it is what it is. Sucks to see the season end.

Sometimes I practice my figure 8s all day without a break, I guess I fish "hard"

| I have noticed that a lot of fishermen do not think trolling is fishing hard. The hardest days of fishing I have ever had have been in 3-5 foot wave for 15 hours checking setting and cleaning weeds off of 6 rods on the bay. I have put 15 hours in casting double 10's on vermillion or LOTW and not been near as tired at the end of the day |

Words of wisdom. For some reason it's become some sort of "badge of honor" among Musky fisherman to say "I fish hard". To me, there is a difference between "fishing hard" and "fishing stupid". At the end of my two weeks in Canada (last few days), i will sit out a spot or two during the day. Rest my back/arms, rehydrate, and just enjoy the scenery out there.
If I can't do a good figure 8, or am mentally wandering, then I'd rather my bait not be in the water. I'd rather that fish come in and eat one of my boat mates baits. Thats just the way it is. Nobody will ever accuse me of not "fishing hard" as I am out there slugging away from sun up to sun down for two weeks straight. |
