Anyone,What is the best way to keep that sucker in the strike-zone?Seems I add some weight to my line then look back and my bait is at the surface! [:(] how much weight works good for say 10"-12" bait?To fish 14'-18'foot down.In 8years I have never sucker fished and I want to get good at it ,but am not having much luck!ANY TIPS WELCOMED!
Thanx Jeff

Rubber core weights dude!!! Come over tommorrow night and we'll rig one up. Seems the ones that like to stay up, need a little more lead above the leader. Are you using a rubber band or a single hook to drag your quick set? Seems the rubber banded suckers stay down better. I like adding a "butt dart" too, adds flash and helps keep them down, and slightly subdued.

Rubbercore sinkers 3/4 or 1oz works best. One more if you have the equiptment to run them behind a 3 pound downrigger ball. I use a small snap like you would find on a offshore planner board and adjust to a light setting. I like this because its easy to adjust depth. Run the Sucker 6 to 8 feet behind the ball and cruse and cast like normal. (legal on my water)

You crank your downrigger rod down and wait for it to trip like a "tip up". [;)]

Rubber sinker attatched to the rig helps for sure. I use a a quick strike rig on suckers over 10 inches. However I use the single hook in the yail and add the treble in the back, I place the rubber core near the treble . By doinf this I find the sucker swims without getting snagged up and the musy can swallow it without the leader getting in his way.
I believe many muskies srike a sucker only to spit it out because of the leader. Why make it hard for then to swallow your bait. Gice it a try.

Don - I am sure you did not mean "swallow" when you referred to the quick strike rig. I don't mean to get nitpicky here but I think it is important to watch terminology when dealing with live-baiting.

As far as getting the bait down deep... good idea Jason.. never thought of the dowrigger![] If you don't have a dowrigger then maybe just adding more weight would do the trick. if 3/4 or 1 oz. rubber core do not work then just upsize to 1 1/2 or 1 3/4.

I use a rubber core sinker about 3 to 4 feet in front of the sucker. Try to use as little weight a possible to get the depth you need. If the boat is drifting to fast, I will back troll into the waves to work a area if I want to slow down a bit.
Snap weights will work but are a little expensive.
The Down Rigger thing that Jason uses work good also!

O.K guys now I am confused,if I am fishing with bait less then 10",I use a single circle or khale hook? Is that safe to do?I have been trying and can only get medium size bait around home!Still taking notes! Jeff

Use a true mustad circle hook 10/0.. That would be the best in your timber.

Cabella's has them, but you have to ask for them.

I don't really use suckers very much, but don't they usually go to the bottom? When i get them (which isn't very often) I just let line out (no casting) and let the sucker swim all by itself It seems to go pretty far down. Of course maybe thats why a sucker has never caught me one hmm...
