Posts: 4269 Location: Ashland WI | I have an older (10 years?) Shimano Catala. When I am casting, it makes a louder "whirring" noise. I downloaded a Shimano maintenance guide, and lubed where it said to. I have tried to put all of the "brakes" in or out. Nothing has worked. The reel works smoothly and quietly on retrieve. Any ideas?

Maybe it is bearings. | ||

Posts: 1 | I have a smaller Catala. The first one I bought the gears would occasionally grind/touch on the cast, sounded horrible. Returned it for a new one. It does it occasionally as well, just not as often. From checking online, this was not an uncommon problem, which was too bad because it's a solid reel otherwise. If I were you, I'd be satisfied I got ten years out of it and save up for a new reel.
