Posts: 7010 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | You're going on that one trip you look forward to all year...that you've done year after year or now for the first time. How many baits are you bringing?

Posts: 410 Location: With my son on the water | Yup I bring every bait I own. They are not all out but I have them, (maybe in a box in the truck) I have had several trips where I had to borrow lures because the bite was on (what I left home). Never again.

Posts: 377 | Over the many years of musky fishing I have ended up with well over 200 baits and it is one of my passions to add 5 - 10 new baits each year whether I need them or not. For a one week trip I will typically figure out what group of 100 to actually bring based on time of the year, anticipated weather, fishing reports etc. Out of that 100 I will decide the 50 or so to put in my tackle box that I bring on the boat each day. Having choices and options and making decisions like this is one of the joys of musky fishing.

Location: Eastern Ontario | If going to the Larry and know I will only be trolling I take about 20. If I'm going out for an evening of casting at home I take about 25 and use 3 or 4. If going up north or anywhere I don't know what to expect I will have 300 in the truck (not the boat ) edit: I should have read the one week part Edited by horsehunter 9/19/2014 6:47 AM

Posts: 23 | The Answer seems obvious: 100+ for sure. Personally i've been collecting lures a long time, but over the course of a week a lot of things can happen! Weather can change, patterns can change, ect. I see some guys griping about 100+ lures and its way too many. Not for a trip like this, you bring 10 lures for a week? You kidding me right!?!?! You might only throw 5-10 of these lures but that's not what we're saying, be prepared for anything - the best that you are able to be. Tight lines.

Posts: 325 Location: Otsego, MN | I have 200-250 lures and when traveling I tend to pack up ~50-60 to have with. When I go out on the boat I bring about half of those if its my boat and if its someone elses, then I will bring 1 plano or two filled. When going on a trip you should be able to downselect a large number of baits based on time of year, anticipated water clarity, bite, etc. But I still always throw in a couple odd balls just in case... Never know when a random fall day they are tight lipped and only want that 4-6" spring lure

Posts: 1185 Location: Iowa | We always bring waaaayyyy too many baits and end up using around 10 or so, but you never know when that one bait you have sitting at home will be the "magic" bait and you'll regret leaving it at home...

Posts: 1973 | big games, cranes and such lips break a lot in the net or if you hit a rock .. Heck sometimes ill even wear out a few bucktails (some of the flashabou "ties" have gone downhill-IMO) ....Local water I often bring 4-5 baits.....If I'm going a week heck ya I'll bring 100 + baits...takes up very little room and I want replacements for my hot dozen Edited by IAJustin 9/19/2014 10:10 AM

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | Hundreds..... why leave them at home when they could be stowed away somewhere in the boat, truck, cabin, etc... in case you want to bring something out that didn't make it into the original line-up in the small lure assortment that you assume you will use the entire trip. I could probably get by with 10 baits but I don't want to. I want to have 10 baits and 3 diffrent sizes and 6 different colors for each size for all 10 of those baits. That is 180 baits right there. Now throw in the odd stuff that you only have 1 or 2 to try... the numbers can add up quickly. Better have a good tackle storage system.

Posts: 880 Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | How many differnt styles of baits are there? Then different colors, weighted, suspending, size of blades. Come on your talking a week of fishing. Thats what 2 boxes of baits......... I agree why leave them at home, if there's room bring them. Netman

Posts: 2089 | As a former bait addict, this thread is pretty amusing. I've always said that it's better to need and have than to need and not have. That being said, I'll forget about the "number" of baits I bring, focusing more on the "what".Certain bodies of water may have some idiosyncrasies that will dictate a certain style/ color but typically the standards will work anywhere the green fish swim. Being able to use different techniques with the same bait is also a plus. For example , many rubber baits can be worked top to bottom as well as spinnerbaits. Versatility eliminated a lot of baits from the boat. Casting vs. trolling is another factor. Many baits will do double duty. I laugh at guys changing baits all the time , because EXPERIENCE has taught me........WHEN they eat, THIS is what they DO eat. Pretty simple formula. Have confidence in your location and presentation and let the casts fly!!! Edited by Steve Jonesi 9/19/2014 12:56 PM

Ok, I'm Busted...And I was just kidding....(I didn't get the Rise out of some of you guys that I thought I would) Seriously, I probably have around 300 lures and since I fish alone a lot I'd bet there are at least 80-100 in my boat at any given time....But with that said, I would imagine I've used maybe 20-30 of those 100 Lures in the last 2 yrs of fishing. Now Feel free to throw me out of the Boat.... Ha,haha

Posts: 688 Location: Northern IL | How many baits you bring vs. how many baits actually see the water for a lot of us are two different things. In a couple of weeks I'll be leaving for Canada for the tenth straight year. Every time I've brought way more lures than was needed. For trolling no matter the trip I need basically about 9-10 different lures to reach all the depths'. Depending on the water being fished (maximum depth in the area, water color, weather condition and seasonally) this dictates to a great degree just how deep will be need to be checked. I like some of the things Jonesi says about learning from his experience and my experience and others says at least on this trip, at this time of year I only need to bring 4 lures. I will of course have several back ups of each. For the last 4-5 years we have landed hundreds fish of at least 8 different species muskies included. These 4 different lures, 3 for trolling, all are used to check different depths and speeds and only 1 for jigging or casting. I fish with a guy who enjoys switching baits a lot but while he's spending some of his time switching baits I plod along with the same, tiered, not hot old lures year after year and nothing changes our success. However this year Im excited about adding a new lure... to my line up, what do you think? I pretty much bring all the baits that I have, or at least pretty much what fits in my boat, for the most part. When I went to Canada, I didn't bring ALL my Pounders and other rubber, I brought a Pounder or two and a small handful of other rubber, all my bucktails, all my cranks, all my topwater. I brought all I could bring of the stuff I figured I'd most likely be using. If I own it, why not bring it? I'd hate to be on "the" trip of the year and be wishing I had the bait I left at home.

Posts: 146 Location: Alsip, IL | My lakewoods travel wherever i do. As for when I'm on the water, I'd say usually have 30 or so baits on my pedestal pal and another 20 to 30 in boxes. Not that I'd ever throw 60 baits in a day, but ya never know what I'll feel like throwing. If action is hot, I like to throw some new baits. Best time to build confidence.
