Don't know whats under there in your application but the snap off togglers like in the link have worked for us in the past when dealing with screws that no longer hold. Lots of places sell this style but they are simple to install and hold very well with 1/4 20 stainless screws

Hiya,

How invasive are you willing to go? If you can remove the floor board, the fix will be to add a sheet of aluminum plating below the deck, then reinstall the deck.

Most manufacturers will have this kind of plate below deck which allows for heavy machine screws to hold the plate rather than have to hold to wood or composite, which is usually not as strong.

The toggle bolt idea will work, but one thing to consider here...if you have to remove the base for some reason, the only way it is coming off is for the toggle wings to completely unscrew...and reinstalling will require retrieval of them...

My gut says, take a little time to remove the deck, install a piece of aluminum plate to the underside, then reinstall the pedestal base. That thing will be rock solid!!

I can't swear by it, but I was pretty sure the Tuffy's had 1/4 aluminum plate under the seat pedestals standard. I am sure they did after 2004 redesigns. I will check, as Steve Worrall is at the outing.

OK, aluminum plates were used in every boat made from about 1993 to present.

Use 1 1/2" long screws. Turn the base so you can drill fresh holes.

The toggles I've used don't fall down and allow for the seat to be removed and installed again if necessary. They are held in place and work very well.

The way my floor is set up toggle bolts won't work because there is hard foam right under the floor that I can't chisel out

Seal the old holes with silicone sealant...lots of it.

I drilled new holes and they still seemed to pull out. It seems that whatever material is right under the deck is weak ther or rotten or something.

We were able to use a bent pick and chisel out foam for the toggles .

You need to make sure you are not using screws the same size as your drill, and need at least 1.5" screws. Goop up the threads with silicone sealant before running them in. When drilling through, there should be resistance as you go through the aluminum plate.

If that fails to work, get a 3" hole saw and a drill. Go to the exact center of the base placement, and slowly and carefully cut a hole in the floor. Then you can dig out the foam and use regular T Nuts, place the T nuts first and run them up into the glass so they stay put, and use bolts instead of screws. Place a coffee can plastic lid over the hole gooped up with silicone after sealing the end grain of the hole carefully.

If when you cut the hole, the wood in the floor is soft, you may need to replace a small section, which is not too difficult.

My boat came with the helm seat base tapped/bolted to about a 16”x12”x3/8” polished aluminum plate screwed down directly on top of the carpet. I suspect the previous owner was a big guy who had it custom-made, it looks factory with everything countersunk and polished.

Any decent machine shop should be able to mount your base to any size plate you want/need, then you would be down the road with something that's easy to install and rock solid. I can post a picture if you're interested…

After looking at it, it's might be 1/4" thick and not 3/8"... there are also different grades of aluminum to consider as well.

Jerry, That is the typical mounting plate that comes with first generation Smooth Moves seats.

Nice, sure answered the question of why it was installed in my boat in the first place. Haha, didn't mean to imply that the original owner had a weight problem.

I might be ordering one of those set back plates for the passenger side to get that seat away from the dash some more, and will seal up good with caulk too... so some useful information for me as well - thanks!

I think the concept of a custom plate is still an option for Justin, and the set back plate might be an inexpensive solution too because it can be bolted down in front of his weak spot in the floor. I also really like the way it reduces the leverage that's created when leaning back against the seat... that's normally when they pull out.

Off subject; those smooth moves seats are worth every penny in rough water for anyone with back problems BTW.
