Posts: 750 Location: Minneapolis, MN | Looking to do a Canada trip with my father and brother in-law either next year or the following year. Most likely would be a 4-5 day trip that would target musky and w/e else is biting at the time, I have no problem fishing musky 4-5 days straight but they aren’t as diehard as I am. We wouldn’t be bringing our boat so high quality rental boats is a top priority. They were thinking they would want to go early September as they figured it wouldn’t be too cold yet but would be cool enough that the mosquitos and flies probably wouldn’t be as much of an issue anymore, no idea if that’s true or not. Fly in probably isn’t an option, my father is on blood thinners so “quick and easy” access to emergency healthcare is something we would be looking at, but you never know. We would be driving from Minneapolis. Any suggestions you might be able to provide is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Eagle or Wabigoon. Wabigoon has very close access to Dryden which I assume would have healthcare. I'd go at least 7 days as well. Figure 2 days will be eaten up by driving, that would leave you with 2-3 days fishing. Weather could kill one or two days.

Posts: 397 Location: Wisconsin | Been going to Century Lodge on Eagle Lake for a number of years. This place is phenomenal. I have been to a number of lodges, and once my group tried Century, we haven't tried another place yet. The fishing is second to none. My group of 6 put 16 musky in the boat over 40 inches, and another 17 fish 39 and under in one week last year. This is the only lodge in the lower third of the entire lake, so there is very little pressure, and over 90miles of shoreline that is exclusive to this lodge. The lodges themselves have everything you need, but they are still rustic, so you really get that "Canada" feel. The rental boats are great. I believe the rental guide boats are 19 or 20 foot long, they are wide and flat bottom so they are easy to cast in. The food and hospitality is fantastic as well. I really recommend Century Lodge!!!

Posts: 397 Location: Wisconsin | BTW, my father too has had a number of heart related health issues. So this was a consideration for us as well. the lodge is about a 40 minute drive to Dryden, which is the closest place to find medical services. otherwise Kenora is about 1hr 15 min I believe

Posts: 306 | I really liked Musky Bay Resort on Crow Lake just north of Nestor Falls, this year. My first time there (having been to Eagle, Wabi, and others in years past). Price was great, boats were great (17', flat bottom, 50hp 4 stroke), and fishing was great. Typical musky fishing, but smallmouth were crazy easy, and a blast in the clear water. You also get access to LOTW at 2 points. Plus, it's about 2 hours closer to home than Eagle or Wabigoon, at least if you are going through Int'l Falls. Not sure of nearby emergency care though, but Nestor Falls is relatively populated. I found this place based on a recommendation on this forum, and was very happy I did. In my experience the flies are typically gone mid-late August. Mosquitoes are only a problem when the sun goes down.

Posts: 125 Location: North Saint Paul, MN | I've been going to Red Deer Lodge in Nestor Falls for over 20 years. They have nice Crestliner rental boats with 4 stroke 50HP Yamaha's. They don't offer any American plans so you'd have to cook yourself or Nestor Falls has a few different restaurants to choose from. Don't think Nestor Falls has a hospital but Emo is less then an hour and has one. If you want to fish Crow Lake which isn't far the owner will pull your boat out and bring you up there for a small fee. Great Musky fishing on Sabaskong as well as anything else you'd want to catch.

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | Dryden and Kenora both have good medical facilities from what I am told. There is no such thing as "easy access" up there though, unless you happen to be in camp when you need to go. More likely you would be out in the boat with a half hour boat ride to get back to camp with no cell service to call for help. Maybe Wabigoon has cell service but I am not sure.

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | The hospital in Dryden is only a half mile or so from the government dock on Wabigoon. And I'd guess you'd have cell service near Dryden to call for help if needed.

Posts: 8781 | I don't think you can go wrong at AML. We're looking at North Shore as a possibility, because the guy who owns it is a good friend of ours. I'm sure he'll run a great camp. If your first concern is access to medical care, than Wabigoon might be a better choice. If it was me, I'd just fish Eagle and figure there's no better place to take your last cast.

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | if you do choose to go to eagle, plan some walleye, smallie and trout fishing and musky fish when you feel a window … there are times she can make what should be great fishing trip into just a great workout.

Posts: 62 Location: Minnetonka MN | We were at Tamarack Island Wilderness Lodge our of Morson Ontario in July this year. Awesome fishing! In one small bay we caught Musky, Huge Pike, Walleye and Smallmouth Bass. We had 11 muskies in the boat in 6 days between 2 boats, with some crappy weather which limited where we could fish. Great people at the lodge. American plan available. We are already booked for next July. Rental boats come in 2 sizes, basic 16Ft Lund and better Alumacraft 17.6ft with 90 HP and all boats have GPS, Terrova. http://www.tamarackislandwildernesslodge.com/ This is a pretty easy drive from Minneapolis. The island is 20 minutes out from the launch point, and the nearest medical facility appears to be in Baudette, so not ideal if you needed emergency care.
