Just wondering where most of your fish come from trolling?

20 feet back? 50 feet back from the boat? 100 feet?

I voted 30 to 60 but depends on the time of year.

Mike,

If I may ask, do you ever troll much farther than 100 feet back?

The reason why I am asking this is, during this offseason I have been trying to figure out what I did wrong last year trolling. All I can think of is that I was trolling too far back. ( The biggest lake\flowage I was on last year was 9000acres.)

I usually would cast the bait out while traveling around 5-7 mph at least 70 feet plus by the time I would lock the reel and set the drag just right I probably averaged about 80-100 feet back. I just didnt have much confidence in a musky biting a short line. But after reading a lot of topics I have heard people say they sometimes go as short as 3 feet!?!?

I guess I just have to trust myself that they will hit on a short(er) line huh?

This probably means that a lot of times your basically running directly over the fish that are 3-5 feet down under the boat?

I'm guessing I average 30-60 feet, but it depends on the conditions. If I want to make contact with a deep shoal (say 20 feet deep) I will let out more line. If I'm tracing a dropoff and want precision lure control, I'll use just enough line to reach a certain depth (sometimes only 15 feet of line). More line out generally means less control over hooked fish and less lure control. Therefore, I use the shortest leash possible.

Keep your hooks sharp.

BTPF the shorter the line the better action you will get from your lure, use just enough line to get to where you want to be. Some times its better to use weight and a shorter line to get to the depth you want. I have caught fish with 10 ft of line out in 20-30 foot of water under certain conditions, I have also caught fish in 30 foot of water with 125 feet of line out, let your graph tell you what to do. If fish are high don't fish below them, usually stay just under the bait fish or just 1 foot above the structure your fishing if its shallow, bottom contact is a must while trolling to provoke strikes. Line length depends on your line diamiter and lure, you must experiment to find your own line lenghts. A line counter and experimentation is your best option. I hope this helps.
