Subject: Honda 25hp prop??

My brother just bought a new boat, it's a late 90's lund laker 16' with a mid 2000's honda 25hp engine. I haven't been out in it yet, but he said it was a bit slow to get up on plane with just him in it, and he could not get it on plane at all with his 2 very young kids and his father in law in it. I know the 25hp could be considered fairly minimal for that boat, especially with close to 500lb of people on board (he's 220, dad is 190, two kids combined are maybe 100 tops, plus 6gal gas and 1 battery) but I would have thought it would eventually plane and be at least "ok". I suspected it might be a prop issue, he did say it had some sort of aftermarket prop. He doesnt have a tach to check rpms...without that I dont have any idea how to proceed determining if its a prop issue. I looked on hondas website, and it doesnt appear they have any sort of recommendation for prop size based on type of boat/weight the way mercury does. Mercury's prop selector suggested a 13.5 pitch prop, but they dont offer one that would work it appears.

How would you go about determining if this is in fact a prop issue?

Does anyone have the same/similar rig and have a prop recommendation that he might check his against?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's not a prop issue. I've got a very similar setup. When gunning it from place to place, someone needs to be sitting in the front of the boat. When by myself I try to keep my heaviest gear up front and it still takes 10 seconds or so to get on plain. Nothing to worry about but weight needs to be up front.

It is definitely at least in part a prop issue. He had it out with the second prop it came with, and had significantly better performance both with him alone and loaded. Based on this alone, i'm certain that the right prop will help significantly. I've also been in similar boats with similar motors that had no problem getting up on plane even with 2 or 3 people in them...not "high performance" but certainly acceptable for a small boat like that.

He called the local Honda Marine dealer, and they said they could not help him determine which prop is correct for his setup!!! I simply dont believe that. Without a tach, Id have thought every honda marine dealer on the planet would be able to look up the recommended prop for a 16' tin boat...there's only a zillion of those rigs out there. Unless anyone has access to that sort of info, I guess we'll Call Honda CS and see what they say.
