Curious: you're going to your one week (or two, hate you!) muskie trip upnorth/downsouth/out east/wherever you go....for you CASTERS, how many rod/reel combos are you bringing?

Just thinking for my October Eagle trip to Andy Myers Lodge, I'll probably bring 7:

-sucker rod (for when its chillaxishness and let the other guy cast)
-big rubber rod
-10s rod
-crankbait rod
-jerkbait
-backup for cranks/10s
-backup for jerkbait

*yes, I always fear that I'm going to break rods at any moment.

If it's strictly Muskie fishing and I'm alone I bring 4. My leaders have snaps on them.

I bring 4. Anymore than that I would be tripping or stepping on them in my boat. I have a 16ft Crestliner. Nice rod locker but when I'm out on the water I keep all my gear out and ready just in case you have to make a quick cast to a follower with a change up bait. Kdawg

I've got 8 casting rods (2 are for smaller stuff for cold fronts and such), 2 sucker rods, and 3 trolling rods. Don't always use them all every time out, but like to have them there just in case.

I bring them all. (11+) Once I have patterns sorted out, the amount in the boat is usually 3-5.

I usually have 3 rods rigged up - double 10, topwater, big rubber

I always bring backup rods and backup reels. Stuff breaks.

I bring 4 combos ... 9' Predator xhvy and Calcutta D for rubber, 8.5' LT hvy Slingblade and Tranx for big bucktails and cranks, 8.5' medium heavy LT Long Ranger and Revo toro for topwaters, suicks and smaller bucktails and 7.10' hvy Predator with HS Revo Toro for jerk baits and WTD topwaters. If its early spring - first two weeks or so I add a 7' heavy Spinning Rod combined with Stradic 400 spinning reel for small jig and plastics and bass baits.

This would have been an interesting choice for how many set-ups do you own also. Interesting comparison.

I bring a couple in the boat, a couple backup rods and reels at the cabin in case something breaks on one of them. I can throw everything with my two primary set-ups.

I can throw everything with my two primary set-ups.

I followed this concept when putting together my set-ups. I opted for two high-quality set-ups, where both had a slightly different application, but were also good all-around set-ups that could serve back-up to one another. I ended up going with:
LT Slingblade extended to 8'11" with 19" full cork rear-handle with Calcutta 400d for gliders, jerkbaits, topwater, and everything smaller than double 10s, magdawgs, 8" cranks, etc.
LT Big Nasty extended to 9'5" with 19" full cork rear-handle with Calcutta 400TE for everything including double 10s, magdawgs, 8" cranks, and larger.

To answer that OPs question, I would just bring 2 setups.

In the boat with me or just for the trip in general?
In the boat 2 muskie rods & 2 bass/walleye rods in the locker.
For the trip around 8-10 rods. Always worried something will break and want back ups but I don't bring them all on the boat. There are more rods on the boat as my brother normally has 3-4 with him.

Don't over think it. Take what you really need to fish the baits you throw (including backups) and no more. The last thing you need to do is behave like a woman who needs every conceivable shoe type and color on a one week trip.

I like to have room in the boat, so I bring 4 rods for 2 people. In a week of fishing I might handle 3 of them. It is like elk hunting, after 5 days and it is time to go home. I find I have the same clothes on as I had on the first day, so I bring 1 small bag to change clothes for the ride home.

I guess it's 10, which easily fit in my boat with plenty of room for the partners fishin poles. If i go in someone else's boat, I can control myself and bring a minimum.

Now that I my rod locker can hold all my rods up to 9 feet I'll be bringing all 7 of my combos when I go out on my boat. Might seem excessive, but I never fish alone.

-Short Jerk- (St Croix LT Classic Jerk w/Curado 300E)
-Jerk- (St Croix LT Jerk w/Revo Toro NaCl60)
-Trolling/Sucker- (St Croix LT Lip Stick w/Calcutta 400TE)
-Trolling/Sucker- (St Croix Premier Glass 8' w/Tekota 500LC)
-Small Bucktails/Cranks- (8'6 Tooth Tamer Med.Heavy w/Revo Roro NaCl60)
-Soft Plastics- (St Croix LT Big Dawg w/Tranx)
-All Purpose- (St Croix LT Big Nasty w/Calcutta 400d)

If I'm taking a quick trip out on a buddy's boat I'd grab my "Jerk", "Big Nasty", and one of my trolling set ups and I'd be pretty well set.

i use 3 combos
1. 7 foot heavy with a curado 301 for anything jerkbait or walk the dog.
2. 8.5 foot heavy 2-8oz with a curado301 for anything from rattle traps up to dbl 8's and small rubber
3. 8.5 foot xtra heavy 4-10oz with a revo toro winch for cowgirls, big cranks and some big rubber, although the winch isn't ideal for big rubber i can get by with it, don't use big rubber that often, so...

I bring nearly everything I own. Not gonna drive 1000 miles and wish I'd brought something I didn't. 3-4 make it to the boat each day.
