So, I was changing the oil filter on my 2003 Johnson 50 4 stroke and I heard something fall. I found this spring on the ground. I have no idea where it goes, but I am pretty sure nothing else came off. Any ideas?

Thx, Rob

i hope its not the only thing i can think of, i recently had my thermostats replaced on my 200 merc, and that spring looks like exactly that, but if your coolant system is not taken apart it best not be, good luck

I would at the very least take it to a marine dealer that still works on them and ask.

I don't know about the spring, but the penny should go in a jar somewhere!

it could have been laying around from a previous repair that someone dropped before and didn't find or bother to look for. does it look like its been in use or does it have grime built up on it? good luck............that kind of stuff drives me insane!

Hi Rob,

The only place I could see this coming from is a screw on the port side of the motor down by the tilt bracket. If you check the shaft where the motor pivots left to right, there should be a bolt with a spring on it, which adjusts the tension on the motor's ability to turn. This may or may not be what is missing as it is a fairly small spring.

I tried searching parts diagrams and came up with that spring, or a shift linkage spring.

Any idea where it fell from? Inside the engine housing, outside housing, etc?

Steve

Hey Steve,
All I know is that it came from the port side somewhere. The throttle and shift linkage is on that side not far from the oil filter towards the front of the engine. I think it was inside the engine as it isn't dirty enough to be exposed. Weird thing is I can't find a screw that fell out or a place that looks like it is missing one. This is a tough one. May have to bring spring to dealer and hope for the best.

Let me know if come up with anything, thx

Rob

The shift linkage also contains a spring in it as well that fits inside a shaft (from what a parts diagram showed)...

Hope you can find it...

Steve
