Location: Lake Geneva, WI | I'm looking to get a new depthfinder before the season. I currently have the 858HD on the dash. I will be moving that up to the bow and will be getting a new one for the dash. If you had to choose between side imaging or down imaging which one would you choose and why. I am looking at either the 800 or 900 Humminbird series as they are in my price range. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! Mike

Posts: 337 Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | The Humminbird side imaging units do include down imaging. I use SI more than DI, but find DI very useful when looking at deep water structure. Fr. K

Posts: 117 | Side imaging, by a landslide, in all depths. Having one si unit on the console, its very helpful to have it networked to your bow unit even if that isnt a si sonar.

Posts: 270 Location: SE WISCONSIN | I use side imageing more.If you are looking at the 899 and the 999 I would get the 999 the 899 does not come with a hdsi transducer. It comes with the same transducer the 798 came with witch is still a side image transducer just not as clear most wouldent know the difference.I dont know if that matters to you.

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Is this a hypothetical question? If not, I use my SI way more than my DI, as my HB997cSI has both and regular color sonar. If I had to give up one it would be DI. However, I can run split screens too in any combination including all three at same time SI, DI , and regular sonar. I have trained my brain to ignore the center black strip in SI mode, and use it only as a depth reference. Some how I automatically interpret the screen as full left <-> right SI image. Get SI & the biggest screen you can afford. DI & regular sonar are part of the package. Have fun! Al

Location: Lake Geneva, WI | Thanks for all the input guys, it's SI by a landslide. Having never used it or fished in another boat with it I was not sure how often it would be used. Thanks again! Mike
