Long story short, the Hi-Fin online store is a bit of a mess and an order which I never got confirmation of from over a month ago...I wrote off as a lost cause. Then all of the sudden this week my credit card gets charged and the next day the baits are at my door.

Upon inspection of the Top Prop design, it has three hooks that are so small and thin (believe they are 1/O), that there's no way they will hold up to the type of fish I am hoping to attract.

What I am thinking is:
1.)swapping from 3 hooks to 2 hooks
2.)swapping to 2/O Mustad 3551 hooks

I did some weighing last night, and this would increase the weight of the lure from 31grams to about 34grams, or roughly increase it 10%. Does anyone think this would affect the action much (like cause it to sit too low and affect the prop sound)? Also, are there any suggestion for a lighter but super strong hook which might help me keep the weight near the same?

Thanks

Try it out, if it doesnt work the way you want, place the old hooks back on.

You state "that there's no way they will hold up to the type of fish I am hoping to attract", and my question is what type of fishing do you do? If you are going to reef them in like a tuna fisherman, then they will not work, but if you play them out a bit and use a net, then they will work just fine. If you feel its too little (the hooks) then look for a bigger topper that has the stones to hold up to a forcible fight.

It's not so much the size as it is the thin-ness. I can pinch the point and with very little effort bend it 45 degrees off the shank in any direction. These hooks would work for a largemouth, but a bigger Pike or Musky, I have zero confidence. I don't fish with the drag cranked down either and do not horse fish, but I could see this hook straightening out just on the hook set!

I hear ya on the trying it out with the thicker hooks and seeing how it runs...only problem is we still got ice here. Oh wait...maybe the bathtub?

when you want to make a good release its out of question to start playing,so decent hooks is always a good thing

Gosh, I must be doing all wrong. Best start to learn how to flip them in the boat like they do on the bassmasters!!!

I just meant over powering them where you could straightening out a hook.

7/0 or 5/0 min. go big or go home! I have dropped to one hook 7/0 on some baits two no 5/0 on smaller. they don't see the hooks but the releases are easier to get them out!
not many lost fish with big hooks. and easier to push thru your skin if you bury one. (needle nose vise grips and a big bolt cutters a must!) saves you down time going to the ER!
Invest in a good hook sharpener and use it!
Go to the school swimming pool and try it out!
