Talking about the phantom here. What do you prefer and when would you use one over the other? I don't really throw a lot of gliders, only own a 8" hellhound and a monster squirko, but I'm trying to improve my early season performance and was thinking of throwing a glider on the opener here in MN. Just looking for thoughts and advice. Wish the Musky show and TB sale would get here already.

I like them both. The 7.5 gets a little more action and swing then the 6". Early season I prefer the 6" for sure over the 7.5"

I always thought I got a little more belly roll with the 6 inch and I found I could werk it little faster.

Coulda just been the angle offa the ceiling mirrors though..

I disagree with river kid, I feel I get way more action from the 6". Plus you can really work it fast if you like. They work all year too, not just spring.

The 6" can be "quick hopped" or worked very quickly much easier.....this gives the allusion of speed but stays in the strike zone for a long time. The 7.5" can be worked deeper and as said above, has more glide side-to-side. The 10" is also an incredible tool.

Can you use the same leader for the 6" and 7.5"? I seem to recall someone saying that a leader inhibited the movement of the smaller phantoms.

Yeah you can. I do at least. I have not had any issue between the two sizes. I actually get more belly roll out of my non soft tail 7.5" phantoms then I do out of my 6"ers. I do however think the 6" is just slightly more versatile. But generally if I am going to put on a phantom, I will reach for my non soft tail 7.5" blue gill, the belly roll on that thing is just nuts. Then again I switch lures like a mad man, so maybe don't listen to me.

They werk best with a leader approximately as long as the bait is so they can swing like a hinge on the glide. Gets more apparent with shorter/lighter gliders.

I would agree that you can get more speed out of the 6" than the 7.5". Personally I'll start with the 6" on opener and if that doesn't work I'll try upsizing.

My best action with mid-size phantoms or any other similar wtd jerk is with an 8" piano wire leader, no swivel and attached with a split ring. Action improves with solid leader and reduction of non-essential weight.

I got a 7.5" phantom this winter. I made a wire leader out of bucktail wire. 12" wire after twists leader is about 9" and another out of 15" wire after twists it's 12". I made the short one first but read somewhere you want your leader at least as long as your bait and I got a 8" wild action wabull and the short leader seemed not enough. Would the 12" leader be too long on the phantom? Should I use the 9" one instead and put the longer one on the wabull? Attached with split ring to lure and tied direct to the other end of the wire leader. If it's too short and the fish hits while the leader isn't straight it could cut the line so I'd assume the longer the better or would it be too heavy?
