Posts: 42 Location: Pewaukee Lake | Looking to equip new Ranger with rod holders and not sure if I should go with Folbe's or Down Easts. Will be mounted to rail. I have owned both and have no complaints. I'm curious how well Folbe's would hold up in the down rod position (rod straight down off gunwale). Anyone with experience running them in this fashion please chime in!

Posts: 546 Location: MN | I have heard that DE's are not meant to be run in this position because they can pop up, losing your whole rid if not tethered to the boat.

Posts: 944 | Ive ran Down east rod holders on down rods for over 20 years never had a problem with them popping out ever. That is the only rod holder I trust. I have destroyed many others. Jeff Hanson madisonmuskyguide.com

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I have Folbes but have not run them in the down rod position. With that said, both the base and the rod can be locked in, so don't think the rod or holder popping out would be an issue. Like I said though, never tried it.

seriously there is some reasons why all the best trollers only play with salty down easts.

Posts: 243 Location: South Central Wisconsin | I run all Folbe Jr. I have had absolutely no issues with the down rods. I would not hesitate on them. No doubt DE makes a great holder but, my Folbes don't eat my cork...

Posts: 791 Location: WI | After watching Keyes fumble with trying to unlock his folbes the past few years I wouldn't buy them. Down east are money. Look how "down " saric has them on musky hunter tv. I just wish they would broaden there line to include extensions and flush mounts of some sort.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I hope this doesn't come across as being too mean, but if you watch closely, Keyes could fumble with just about anything, especially in the excitement of having a fish on. He's not the smoothest angler I've seen. The key is to pull up relavely evenly on the front and back of the holder. If that's done they should pop right open.

Posts: 833 | Never had an issue popping my Folbes... Has anyone had a Folbe fail, that is my question? I've never had it happen, but I still get nervous with all the torque pulling 13s at 5MPH creates...

Posts: 42 Location: Pewaukee Lake | It's not the baits I'm pulling, the speed I'm going or the fish that hit that I'm concerned about. Rather trolling in the dark and come across a huge mat of floating weeds. Will a Folbe in the down rod position stand this test! I know a DE will however wife and kids really struggle getting the rods out of the DE thus my desire to look into other options! Thanks for all the replies!!

Keyes is fumbling with the lock button on the Folbe, which don't need to be locked anyhow, unless mounted to the stern in the down position. When not locked, they are the smoothest/easiest rod holder I've used. My 6 year old daughter easily pulls a loaded rod from my Folbe's, which was part of the reason I took my DE's out in favor of them. I don't troll everyday all day, but I haven't broken one yet, using them since 2008. Joel at Folbe is a super dude too, give him a call if you ever have any issues.
