As stated by Steve Heiting on the Musky Hunter board:

LAST EDITED ON 02-27-03 AT 11:22 AM (CST)

"Hi:
I just got off the phone with Steve Oestreicher, chairman of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, regarding the gaming compacts Wisconsin's governor is negotiating with the tribes.

Steve called linking gaming compacts to spearfishing the "last tool that's in our box."

If you want the tribes to make spearfishing concessions -- particularly regarding winter spearing -- call the governor's office direct: 1-608-266-1212.

Please do so today. We don't have much time left. I'm making my call as soon as I finish posting this message.

Hi:
I just got off the phone with the governor's office, stated my case, and was done. I was told my comments would be passed on to the governor (for what that's worth).

However, if we all make phone calls, the guv can't help but notice. Keep your comments to the point. You will be asked for your name, address and daytime telephone number at the conclusion of the call.

Here's the gist of what I had to say. Use it as a guideline for your own call if you choose:

Hi, my name is ______________ and I'm from ____________, and I'm calling to ask that Governor Doyle demand spearfishing concessions by our Native American tribes when he's negotiating gaming compacts. Spearfishing has hurt the tourism of northern Wisconsin, and unregulated winter spearfishing -- particularly for muskies -- is causing considerable damage to the fish resources of our northern lakes.

Thanks in advance for your efforts -- just call and try to make a difference!

Steve Heiting

I thought this is something very important that needed to be posted more than just on that board. Come on guys. Give the Gov. a call and state your concerns. I'm using what Steve said as a guideline. I think that all the out-of-staters would really help to. I think if the Gov. heard concerns from people that bring money into the state he might consider our requests a little bit more.

Thanks everyone!

THIS IS VERY SERIOUS....

If the Governor and tribes get their way the state legistlators will not have power only opinions when it comes to gaming compacts. They are trying to set it up so the Governor gets all the barganing power and has sole authority to sign the compacts.

IF we stand a snowballs chance in hell of ever getting anywhere with this issue we need to get this stopped now...!

Once something like this passes it will be next to impossible to ever get it reversed...

Please call....if you care about Wisconsin's fishery you will make the call.

I see that the Conservation Congress came out in the paper today against a longer deer rifle hunt. That raised my blood pressure. But where's the press release trying to elimate winter muskie spearing?

The Conservation Congress leadership already has deep sixed the proposal to raise the muskie size limit on the Wisconsin River from Stevens Point to the Petenwell Flowage. As you know this proposal was overwhelmingly approved in the four counties affected. Apparently the leadership of the Conservation Congress does not believe in the democratic process of voting. I hope they don't do the same to the 50" proposal.

Are you sure the Conservation Congress is on the muskie fishermans side? I'm not sure, I think that they really need to prove it.

Lets put the Conservation Congress back to what they are supposed to be - an advisory group that the DNR can choose to take the advice of or just say "thanks, but no thanks" to.

9 of us called from my house tonight.

Buddy

I just made my call. I was told it would be passed along to the Governor.

I also stated that I thought the numbers of musky speared through the ice should be kept track of. It originally was stated that the quantity of fish was not a significant amount. 70+ fish from small Arrowhead lake in one winter is not significant?

Just made the call also! Think it freaked him getting a call from Va...I used the format suggested in the post; hopefully they will realize the potential impact their decisions will have on the tourism dollar and act accordingly, as someday I hope to lead an entourage up that way. The guy that answered the phone took down my name and phone #, so at least the office is aware of widespread influence. Hopefully more out of state people will call to show support...

***Dave K..do you have the e-mail address you mentioned in your post?
