I primarily fish the Wisconsin River in central Wi. The river clarity is pretty bad. In the fall it seems to clear up a bit, but only to about 1' of viewing pleasure. More often than not, you don't see a follow until the fish is right in front of your face.

I'm wondering what could be done with figure 8's to increase my odds of hooking fish before it gets scared off by the boat, or me, or the rod in the water.... I was just brain storming and I thought of an idea. What if I began the figure 8 a couple feet early, instead of pulling the bait right up under me and then beginning the 8?

Any other ideas? I'm not even sure mine is a good one haha!

I've fished that river a bunch. What seemed to work that I did different was to do an extra figure 8 or large circle. One is shallow and one is deep. No way to tell if it increased hooking percentages but it did eliminate the lingering thought of not doing enough when I asked myself the same question. Sometimes they ate on the shallow circle, sometimes they ate on the deep circle.

In dirty water (or after dark) the key is to do a figure 8 just like you would if you knew a fish was there, sounds simple but most people get lazy. Also, if you catch a glimpse of a fish, say it turns off fast at the boat or doesn't even follow all the way. Keep Going like the fish is behind your bait! Here is an example, all I see is a flash behind my bait 10 yards from the boat, the fish doesn't follow all the way, but obviously it is close, It amazes me how many people fish for 3 hrs to get one follow and then pull their bait out of the water as soon as it starts to swim away. Often they are just repositioning and strike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S9yRteeQRk

I just keep the bait in the water and keep it moving...

Figure 8 just like you go in clear water. They'll eat.
