Posts: 1000 | Muskie fever is getting really bad so I'm coping the only way I know.... retail therapy. I'm thinking about picking up a St. Croix Tidemaster rod: 8' MH 14-30lb 1/2-2oz or 8' H 17-40lb 3/4-3oz Which one? think jigs, light swim baits, etc And then I'm trying to decide on a reel: Shimano Stradic Ci4 4000 Quantum Smoke PT Inshore 40/50 Quantum Cabo 40/50 Which one would you choose and why? Open to other suggestions in that $150-250 range. Thanks!

Posts: 49 | 5000FJ Stradic seems like the most common choice. The Ci4 looks like a good 1000-2500 reel but for bigger game fish I would get the 4000-5000 FJ.

Posts: 149 | I've used a 4000 Shimano Sahara (~$80) for three seasons. I use it anytime the temps are below freezing (~late Nov - early March). No issues with it yet in pretty extreme conditions. I'll go with the Stradic when the Sahara dies. I've thrown a lot of different baits but a few that see a lot of time are mini Medussa, ninja tube and double d.

Posts: 1000 | Thanks guys. I was concerned the 4000 size might be too small so it's reassuring to hear that its working for other guys. Keep in mind, this thing will see salt (Cabo, FL Keys) so if you have any notes on that they'd be much appreciated. Thanks!

Posts: 9 | I throw up to 5 oz baits with a 4000 series Shimano Sedona and have landed fish up to 45 in. without them getting any line unless I wanted them to. The Shimanos are salt water ready also! I've put one season in (around 250+ days on the water) and the reel is still running like a beast.

When you throw such big baits, how stout is the rod rating?

Posts: 335 Location: Pulaski, WI | I have a Lamiglas lgm 80 xhs rated 1-6 oz. With a St Croix avid 4500. Throws a musky killer a mile and can burn it at warp speed.

Posts: 1000 | Can you tell me more about this lamiglas? I'm looking for that 1/2-3oz range as my other setups cover a good range. Really just want a spinning setup that can handle the pike-sized swimbaits and tackle light saltwater

Posts: 335 Location: Pulaski, WI | Its a nice rod. I have never thrown anything lighter than a muskie killer, but based on how it throws them can probably go lighter using 30 lb braid. I haven in thdrown anything much heavier. Plan to use it more this is spring.

Posts: 9 | The rod is rated 1-4 oz so you can't push it too much. Within 5 oz is easy to throw. I've put a Pounder on the end of the rod just to see what it felt like. Haha, you'd be lucky to even "lob" it out there. You can throw the lighter stuff all day, though.

Posts: 1248 Location: Walker, MN | I have had good luck with the Penn Legion Inshore Spinning Rods ( LEGIN2040S80 ) coupled with a Stradic or Sahara in either 4000 and 5000 sizes. A 4000 is plenty for braided line imo.

Posts: 753 | I use a Custom St Croix LTS Flipping Stick that I had Franks make into a Musky Spinning Rod. I have used 5000 series but now stick to 3000 or 4000 Series Sustaine's. I think the 5000 is overkill for musky since you do not need the line capacity like you would for Tarpon Fishing.

Posts: 216 Location: Middletown, Ohio | Been looking into getting a spinning rod for muskies too, check out the St. Croix Mojo Inshore 7'6" H fast action rated up to 2oz. I think it's the one I'm going to go with. Mark

Above 1.5oz I'll rock my Mojo Musky 8 1/2 w/ the curado. Have you decided on a reel for this?
