I had some success trolling this year, mostly in the early season. I'm looking to transition from a dragger to a troller. Would anyone have any suggestions on things to do to make the jump? Also interested in suggestions for picking which basins to fish. I fish TC Metro so no Ciscoes and no Shad, but that doesn't mean other people wouldn't benefit from advice on those lakes. Also interested in suggestions specific to MN where we can only have one line per guy.

It is winter, so lets have a good discussion. I'm leaving it vague as it is January and most of us cannot fish right now. Have at it.

I'm also interested in this topic because I've had such limited success with trolling having only landed a handful of fish in the last two years trolling. I troll open water and shorelines with all the "hot" baits but never get on a consistant bite. Also, interested in MN trolling where I'm by myself with one line.

Those who become good knowledgable trollers learn quickly that trolling is not by itself just another technique or method to produce fish. He soon learns that ahead of every trolling pass is important information to be gained of the bottom features. Once he knows what to look for, processing that information is key to teaching him "where" and when to cast or troll and why.

I would recommend studying the works of Buck Perry:
