Heard that the Supernatural Headlock, MatLock are a great trolling bait, but also very expensive. I assume that people are catching fish on them based on the fact I hear so many good things? any input out there? Also, who carries them?

Thanks!

Thorne Brothers has them. Beautiful baits. Bought one last year for a friend who could not make it to the show he swears by them. He swears alot. He says they kick out and go erratic things while trolling.

Matlock is longer and thicker. about 12" as compared to 10" and double the thickness. More round as opposed to flat sides. for more than that, you will have to ask Duff

Actually the Matlock is 12 inches long, as well as the standard headlock that is also 12 inches long. The difference between the 2: They are the same length (12 Inches) but the Matlock is wider across the back which allows it run at a slower speed. For a Headlock, ideally I like to run it at 2.8 MPH and go UP from there. A Matlock you can go at a lower speed. They both will "walk" or "hunt" while they are trolled which means the wont stay in a straight line, they "walk" to the side sporadically without "blowing out."

The Headlock is the more popular and easiest to get your hands on, Thorne Brothers is the place to get them. Give them a call or order one online. Get one now, or when you can before the season starts, Duff makes them as fast as he can, but it is a LONG process, so Thorne can only get so many at a time. Are they spendy? Yes, but the action is second to none, and they are ultra durable.

Hope this helps

P.S. Keep your eye out soon for some 10" Headlocks that will be floating around, he's starting to develop a 10 inch Headlock that has the same action and characteristics as the popular 12"

I have some 10, 12 and a coupe of the 14 inch Super naturals.. All awesome baits. the 10's cast pretty nice too if you want to mix it up. The clevis pin on the lip gives some pretty bad arse action when ripping them.

I have been using the Super Natural the last two years and have done pretty good with them 14 avg size 45
Last year I bought a Headlock 3 avg 40. The Super Natural has required some maintenance epoxy over tooth holes and around hook hangers replacing rear hook hanger with a larger size. Lures do take a beating and hold up well. I would be interested in a 10" model.

The 10 inchers are great. They have been sporadically available for a little while now. Both of the regular 12in Mattlocks and Headlocks are awesome. Duff will certainly have some absolutely must have customs at the MN show. The comments about the walk and action are all true. Super durable. I have used a bunch of these for years, pounding rocks, many many hrs of run time and they will hold up. They are easily worth the price. Duff also has some other very interesting items in the pipeline.

We get more questions about these baits than any other and will try to set the record straight here:

Big Wood Supernatural - AKA Fat Headlock - AKA Mattlock
This bait is 12" and has a wider Profile or body than the standard Headlocks. More importantly, it has a wider lip that gives it a wider, more aggressive walk or "wander". Runs slightly deeper than the other 2 baits. In my opinion, it has more of what makes these baits so special and is my first choice when trolling lakes. It is exclusively available at Big Wood Musky Lures.

10" Headlock
Same thinner profile as the 12" headlock and same lip width. Easier to cast than the other 2 baits due to it's size. Nice wander. Not as aggressive as the Big Wood Supernatural. May run a few feet more shallow than the other 2 baits. Exclusively available at Big Wood Musky Lures.

12" Headlock
Again, Same thinner profile as the 10" Headlock and same lip. Great wandering pattern. Runs at a depth right in between the 10" Headlock and the Big Wood Supernatural. Available at Thorne Brothers and coming soon to Big Wood Musky Lures.

All three baits are highly recommended and all have caught a lot of really nice fish. All three have 3 depth settings for depth control with a durable aluminum lip. Very hard baits to keep in stock!

The "MattLocks" aka Fat perch aka Kevin Dickenson's fat headlock, has a wider wobble then the standard Headlock. More of a head to tail, agressive wobble. The standard headlock has more of a belly to top "shimmy". More like a Rapala. Both "hunt" like crazy.

I like the Headlocks in cool water or heavy pressured waters. I use the MattLocks in war water periods and at night.

Surprised no one has caught on to the "Liplocks" yet..............

Hi all, thanks for the interest in headlocks. Some folks gasp a little when they see the pricetag but after the committment, they take a deep breath, they set one out and let them do their thing and the results settle in. After one figures in the number of fish caught and the size per fish on headlocks, the price is worth it compared to the other lures one has in their tackle box. 12" headlocks, MattLocks and Big Wood supernaturals continue to earn their reputations but the 10" headlock reports are strong and backup pictures are showing that every week.
Muskie shows are here to bring people together, it's the talking and sharing information and results that mean something to us. I wish I could attend them all. I'm just glad to be included in the results part. Thanks again for the comments.

Last summer I fished with a buddy who trolls, we had 6 fish, with 3 over 50 inches. I now own a Headlock and a Supernatural to use when I am not fishing with him. If you troll, they are a great tool.

for those of you that have tried the Supernatural - how have you found it works the best for you? What season (water temp), line tie, length of line ect.... thinking about picking one up. Maybe it woks all the time any way you run it, just curious if its mainly used for example: (45' of line out over 30' of water under 45 degrees on the deep eye) or if it is lure that will catch fish doing that and 3' of line in the prop wash in 75 degree water and everything in between. Since one major key to the bait is it "walks" I would think a short line would hinder that ability?
Your thoughts?
Thanks!

Hey Trollindad,
A shorter line will definitely limit the "walking" on any bait. That being said, we have caught fish with the Big Wood running maybe 5 feet behind a planer board. Using a Church's TX-44 with a Lock-Jaw Release Clip allows you to fish these baits shallow. I've personally only used the shallow lip setting as the lakes I fish are not that deep, but I know some guides who have had success short lining on the mid or deep settings. The bait still walks, just not as much. In fact, I shot the video on the Big Wood web page with about 6 or 7 feet of line out and you can still see it bust out to the sides in the video.

Speed is a big factor on the Big wood Supernaturals. Because it's still made of wood and still made by hand, there is some variance from bait to bait in terms of what speed get's your specific bait to "walk" to it's maximum. When you first get one, run it along side the boat and alter your speed to find it's sweet spot. I'd then lean heavy towards that speed regardless of other factors. Then use line length and the lip setting, with or without planer boards, to get the bait running at your preferred depth. Then hang on!

By the way, ARmuskyaddict is being kind of modest. One of those fish over 50" he mentioned above was this Pig, well over 50" caught on a BIG WOOD Supernatural. Congrats to ARmuskyaddict on this one!

Still getting tons of questions about the differences in these fine baits. These photos should help. Big Wood carries all three.
The original 12" Headlock, the 10" Headlock and the Big Wood Supernatural, AKA Mattlock and a seemingly endless list of other names given this bait.
