Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Looking at installing a cd player in my boat, I've had cassette/amfm in the past with no problems but am wondering.... Do the cd players work when your traveling on the water or do they skip like the first automotive units did? Do I need the marine grade radio/speakers like they sell in boating magazines or at the boat dealers or can I just go to Best Buy and get an automoive version, or am I better off just using a smaller "boom box". I do like music in the boat, especially when fishing alone which I do allot. There is a severe lack of radio stations in my area that play the old late 70's and 80's rock n roll. (I realize this music is not for everyone but being a middle aged ex-rocker I still like straight forward rock n roll.) Most of my stuff is on cd now and I would like to use them in the boat instead of having to use cassette tapes. I know this should probably be on the boat motor page but I thought more people using cd players in the boat might see it here. I'll move the post after a few days. Thanks for the help, Mark

Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | Friend of mine has one says it doesn't skip much, I would ask the sales guy which one he would recommend. I would also mount it with one of the nice marine covers to keep as much dirt and water off it. As far as speakers, if they won't be getting wet all the time a good poly cone woofer speaker will work just fine and sound way better for the money then the ones sold for marine applications. I put a pair of sony 6 x 9's in my dad's boat over 10 years ago and they have taken a ton of abuse.

| Use an 8 track player, and never confess to being middle aged; you'll start forgetting stuff and chicks will stop saying "I can't believe you are that old"!:O | |||

| Mark, Clarion makes a few different marine cd pkgs, Ive had them in my 619 and in my 620,both worked perfect, so of course this year I had to try something new (JVC) and needless to say my next rig will have a Clarion again. I'm not sure of the website but I think it's www.clarion.com Good luck. Matt Thompson | |||

Posts: 96 | With cd players try to stick with a name brand- Kenwood,Clarion,Sony,JVC,or Pioneer. They use a better transport that resists vibration better than the off brands. Most skipping is caused if the cd player is not properly installed. Make sure you use a backstrap on the back of the cd. This keeps it from bouncing up and down. Crimp all of your connections with butt connectors instead of using black electrical tape. Most marine cds really are car players with white face plates. These are fine if you use a splash cover. The best splash cover I have used is made by Pioneer that costs 40 bucks. Clarion has a cd that is truly marine. The front cover is water proof, the circuit boards are encapsalated in plastic and uses stainless steel mounting hardware. Most of the longterm damage is caused not by rain or splashes but by condensation. How many non-rainy nights do you come off the water when everything is wet? These units are expensive at 300+ dollars but worth it if you plan on keeping it for more than a couple of years. For speakers use a poly cone woofer that uses a rubber surround instead of foam. If the speaker is a coax make sure the tweeter isn't paper. Aluminum or poly tweeters are the best for marine use. Better marine speakers will also have stainless steel nuts and bolts and plastic or stainless grills. Again you will get better quality and sound from name brands. Sony or clarion are fine. If you are looking for the best sounding try MB Quart, Kicker or Memphis. These cost more but have deeper bass, clearer highs and the marine grade mounting hardware. As you know most people aren't as trustworthy as us fisherman. With this is mind install your system as securely and stealth as possible. The way to go is a boat alarm. Try boatalarm.com they have a nice selection of quality security products and information. I have been in the audio business for 20+ years if anyone needs help with their stereo systems. Lord knows I will learn a lot about muskies from you. MUSKEEPFISHIN MUSKY39

Posts: 96 | There are times when you need your music. It comes in handy when I have the kids and they are bored. On longer rides to fishing spots as well. I never use it while fishing. If you do have tunes on your boat be considerate to homeowners and other boaters. You know how sound carries over water. Rock On!

| Don't be fooled Divani! They do blare music, but it is of the polka variety, and they do so to keep in touch w/ their "inner selves!" The Ted Mack Amateur Hour is shown up there 24/7, so it is no surprise that this type musical influence is so prevalent. All the shopping centers up that way have dance floors, and 9 out of 10 families take accordion lessons...Lawrence Welk has a Musical Museum in Wisconsin, and is the major summer attraction for tourists; nothing like kicking back w/ some cheese squares and sausage links and jamming down to the old country!:O | |||

Posts: 129 Location: Bemidji, MN- | I have a Clarion in my Ranger. It works great, but I haven't really thought to try it at high speeds. As soon as I put my Hank Williams CD in, everyone backs off and I've got the spot to myself.

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Thanks guys...appreciate the advice, sounds like I'm shopping for a Clarion. That name has been around for years, I think I had one in a car years ago. Sponge, I still have a box of 8-tracks in the garage. Best of BTO Doobie Bros. Frampton Comes Alive Something from the Stones. I think a few more. One of these days I'll throw them out. Divani... I am serious... there are times I really enjoy the peace and quiet especially early morning and at dusk. and times I like quiet music in the backround, my music tastes are very wide but I still love the old straight forward Rock n Roll from the mid/late 70's and early 80's. And yes there are times going across the pond that I like to crank it up, especially when I'm not disturbing anyone else on the water. I have a very severe hearing loss in my left ear as well as being significantly reduced in my right, too many years of being exposed to amplifiers and PA systems. So what is a "comfortable" volume to me is often too loud for people riding in my truck or when I'm at home with the wife. In the boat is one of the few places I can listen to the type of music I enjoy and nobody there to complain and if I'm out there alone I don't have to turn it down. Thanks again for the info...

Posts: 1430 Location: Eastern Ontario | Divani, sometimes tunes are the main pattern. LOL I remember been refered too as the rocking boat that was catching all the fish at the last Can-Am. Me and my partner had the good old rock and roll blasting and the rods were going off all day long LOL. We caught 9 muskies and missed one in 7 hours that day while we trolled around the guys casting and seeing fish but hooking very few. We did get a lot of strange looks but I think it was more about the number of fish we were catching while the music was blasting. I will even listen to music while casting but will have the volume down but when I am trolling the music is loader and don't bother the fish at all. Thank god we got a decent old time rock and roll station in Ottawa and another in Peterborrow.
