Terry,

Quick question for you? How would you recommend one starting out fishing Vermilion? I'm hoping to get up there for a long weekend trip in August before the VDL outing in October. After researching the maps and all would you recommend trying to hit different areas each day or should I concentrate on one particular area of the lake. Such a great lake, with a lot of good areas its hard to choose. Thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy,
The best way to learn it is by one area at a time. If you stay on the west end in August concentrate on
Wakeumup Bay and in the Wakeumup Narrows. That should keep you very busy for a couple of days anyway.

Norwegian bay is also close to the campgrouds but that would be a lot of water to work in just one along weekend. Think Topwater!!!!

Andy, You can't go wrong listening to Terry. There are some great tips for Vermilion on the "Fishing Minnesota" website http://fishingminnesota.com/cgi-bin/forums/Ultimate.cgi?action=intr... You'll also find excellent comments from moderators Musky Tom Wehler, David Swenson, and many other subscribers. I find it's and essential partner to this great website for speeding up the learning curve. Since I live and fish in IN, this site has been an incredible resource. But when I go to Vermilion on our family vacation I study hard on my past trips and the comments posted on the "Fishing Minnesota" site. It's all good! My tips....learn the areas around "The Wash" just south of "Norwegian Point", the "Merry-go-round" and "Stove Top" reefs, the small channel passing between "Treasure Island" and the small island to the east of it, and a small island just east of "Muskego Point" right in the heart of "Wake-em-up Narrows." Tell Grant and Judy/ Joe and Jenny at Muskego Point Resort the Johnson's from IN say "Hello". You will really enjoy the trip. Good luck!

p.s. the 36" pike in the photo was C/R in the Treasure Island channel the last week of July 2002! And in 2001 my nephew caught a 41" pike off the dock at Muskego on a Bomber Model "A" and 15# test! What a BLAST!

Hey Dawg,
Those are some very good tips on locations for the west end. I would also toss in Square Rock and Turtle islands, in the mouth of Norwegian Bay.

Stove Top and Merrygoround do get pounded pretty hard by muskie and walleye fishermen. The key is to hit them early and late in the day for the best results.

so many islands....so little time...

By the way, Terry...You and Tom gonna pair up for the "Big V" event when it happens? I bet the local guides are chomping at the bit. One of our local guides here in IN dominated the Hoosier Musky Classic for a number of years. His wife won it a few time as well. Helps to guide on the tournament lake I'd assume. No guarantees though, right? Hope to meet you guys someday.
Keep us posted this fall, Andy......
