Posts: 1283 | I have a old Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 that was made in Sweden thats in great shape that my Dad left to me. What would be the ideal set up and use for it? I know lures and rods have got huge since this thing was made so Im not sure what it will handle. This will be my back up muskie rod. I have a 7ft St Croix Triumph MH rod I could use with it. Would this be a decent combo? Oh and another thing about the reel. On the bottom of the base that mounts to the rod it says sample. Wonder if this was a demo reel or something? Thanks Mike

Posts: 668 Location: Wisconsin | I have a 5001 (lefty version) that I bought in the early eighties. It was my primary reel until 2010. Throws most baits fine, tho heavier baits I always thumbed the spool. Wouldn't throw pounder, but reg dawgs would be ok. I primarily throw single bladed tails and twich baits. The gearing changed slightly over the years and as said depending on how old yours is it may be a collector item. The MH rod should be a good fit, tho I prefer an 8' like a top n tail or the like.

Posts: 176 Location: ON | That was my first reel when I took up musky fishing. 40lbs dacron and all! That 7' MH is going to be pretty light for most "musky" sized baits. I fished a 7'2"MH St.Croix Premier for a few years and still have it, it worked okay for small bucktails (single bladed #8 or less), and small crankbaits (7" or less), even small plastics like mini medussa, smaller size shadzilla, and jerkbaits that arn't too heavy (like a 6" LEO). If you really want to get into larger baits that are mostly used these days, I would look at upgrading both. I now troll with both my Ambassadeur 5K's. For what they are, they do pretty well on a TDR H for the baits I generally troll (10" and less normally). I know they won't last longterm, but I don't have another use for them, unfortunately the TORO's have taken their place.

Posts: 1283 | Thanks for the posts. How can I identify the reel better? Its black and gold. Doesnt have any serial#s or anything. Says ambassadeur 5000-c, high speed retrieve, ultra cast, stainless steel ball bearing, made in Sweden embossed on the handle side, and sample embossed on the bottom of the base. I dont have a case or tools with it. Heres a few pics My main Rod/real is a Revo Toro NaCl and a 7.6 Premier. I dont throw pounders with it but seems to work good for everything else. A Combo for pounders and huge baits is next on the list. I also fish from a 17ft bass boat and not sure I want a 10ft rod in there.

Posts: 2893 Location: Yahara River Chain | Have you tried to contact www.abu-garcia.com? Other than not having ser # and sample written in the bottom, not sure what you are looking for as far as info. But call Abu and ask them.

| a 6001 is ( to stay gentle) unpleasant for musky fishing,so that make me think your real is more for bass or small pike.if i was you i would get a nice used reel right here at the forum | |||

Posts: 1283 | Just wondering if this is a valuable reel I should just tuck away or if I should put it on a rod as a back up back up.

Posts: 1660 Location: central Wisconsin | Put it on a rod, I highly doubt it is valuable. Looks to me to be made around the mid to late 1990's. No box, no papers, and it has been used.

Posts: 93 Location: Des Moines IA | I total agree with Cal and Clammer. Abu Garcia 5000 was my 1st musky reel. Still have it and a few other Abu Garcia's. It is one of my back up reels to this day. It's not made to fish the heavy lures such as the bull dawgs, double cow girls it's good for lures that weigh 1.5 to 3 oz. Just keep it in good working condition and it will be fine. Also make sure you adjust the lure brake for each bait you use. It will not stand up to the abuse that a fishing guide would apply to it on a seasonal basis. It will be good for the weekend warrior. Good Luck, Larbo

Posts: 1283 | Thanks! I have a couple Revo Toro NaCls, on my other rods, this is just a stuff I had around and felt it could be a useable set up as a back up or loaner. Just wanted to use my Dads old reel mostly.
