Posts: 52 | I bought a new boat this year with a Yamaha 300. When the motor is at an idle in either forward or reverse I hear quite a bit of rattling or noise that sounds like it is coming from the lower unit or prop area. Is this normal? It seems to go away as soon as you speed up.

My Yamaha 250 4 stroke rattles just as you describe, especially after a long run idling in gear, I can really hear it chatter when it's running in my driveway while winterizing too. You're not alone with this concern because the first time I noticed it a couple of years ago, it certainly got my attention too. Edited by Jerry Newman 11/20/2013 9:43 PM

Posts: 228 | Any chance it could be the balancer? I have read on many web+sites that they can cause noise, especially after a long run. My F150 has been doing this for some time now. I just ordered a new balancer for mine. Yamaha has upgraded this part at least twice in the last few years. I have read that if the balancer goes, it will probably take the power head with it! Might want to check it out! Bob

Posts: 228 | My noise does not sound like the lower unit though! My F150 is a 2006 model!

Posts: 27 | My f225 does the same thing, what kind of prop are you running? quite often the stainless steel props have chatter at low speeds....mine does....switch to an aluminum prop and no problems...supposedly an rds prop will help...read page 3 here http://yamahaoutboards.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/Prop-Shop-VOL_2...

Posts: 52 | I have been running a stainless prop. The link is very helpful. I was worried that it was a gear issue. Thanks for your help.
