I'm looking at the Minn Kota Genesis for my new rig. Unfortunately, it only comes in 45" and 60" shaft lengths.

Is the 45" enough? Likewise, is the 60" too long? I don't want it bouncing off of my gunnel during travel.

My second choice would be the Autopilot 65 w/Copilot and a 54" shaft.

Thoughts?

The Genesis has a setting for the length it deploys, and locks solidly in it's base. I had one two years in a row, and liked the motor quite a bit.

Steve - if the motor fails or the batteries die while the motor is deployed, can you manually stow it?

Also, does it stow and deploy reasonably fast, or do you find yourself standing there watching it move at a snails pace?

It depolys very quickly. It isn't likely that the batteries will die while using the unit, there are indicators that will let you know how the charge is. I had a very early model I had to remove from the deck because of a processor problem, and with the quick release plate it was not a problem.

Where did you get the quick release plate? The Minn Kota website and Cabela's only seem to offer the plate for Powerdrive and Maxxum models.

I'm running an autopilot 65 with a 60 inch shaft on my 1850. The 45" would be too short. Go with the 60, better to have too much than too little. I do use a ram mount stabilizer to hold the head in place while trailering and in rough water. Works great.
