Announced today Lowrance will be offering 360 Scan. Unlike the Humminbird offering this unit mounts to your trolling motor so no need to mount and deploy an additional piece of equipment. Plus, the price is a small fraction of what it costs for the Humminbird option.

Important information on the Lowrance:
*HDS Gen2 (non Touch) models require the SonarHub™ module for compatibility with the SpotlightScan Sonar transducer.

**SpotlightScan Sonar installation requires connectivity to a bow-mounted, cable-steer, foot-control trolling motor. Not for use with hand-steer or electric-steer electric trolling motors.

Humminaird Bow 360 unit :

Same deal as Lowrance on the cable steer, has ethernet cable and has GPS with heading sensor built in.

This stuff gets better every day.

I didnt even know that Humminbird had one as well. Very cool for we consumers.
What I am wondering though, does the trolling motor have to spin around in order to get 360 viewing (with either unit)? Or can it be pointed in a forward direction and still scan 360? By the looks of the Humminbird model it would appear it could scan 360 independent of the trolling motor position. Not so sure about the Lowrance option.
It appears the Humminbird only works on cable steer motors??

i'll wait on Humminbird to come out with one since i'm betting they'll integrate it right into a new Terrova model, but at the same time i wonder if that Lowrance 360 transducer might actually be compatible with a Terrova...

although supposedly also "not possible," i mounted my Humminbird SI puck on my Terrova by running the cable inside the indent of the trolling motor shaft and up through the head of the trolling motor, held in the indent by marine epoxy. this allows the cable to slide through the turning sleeve, which is the primary barrier to using these on non-cable steer motors.
if the Lowrance 360 cable is the same size as the Humminbird SI cable, it might work.

Captain,

'now that you can look forward, there's no looking back.
For the first time ever, you can see up to 150 feet in front of your sonar pod, either in full 360 mode or by isolating your sweep area. With valuable intelligence on fish-holding structure and cover waiting up ahead, you can cast to productive areas without spooking fish.'

Yeah, I see the humminbird has some user settings that allows you to choose a "span" area. I like that. So it would appear that its imaging is completely independent of the position of the trolling motor and its not mounted directly to the drive of the trolling motor like the lowrance option is.
So, what I want to find out and havent been able to determine yet is if the lowrance one "spans" in the housing that is mounted to the drive of the trolling motor OR is it directionally dependent on the direction the trolling motor is pointing (IE it doesnt really span unless you turn the trolling motor).
They both look awesome and this is WAY more useable for me in the front of the boat than the previous model that Humminbird released.
The pricing for the Humminbird is really high at $1500. The Lowrance one is $499 I believe. Perhaps it does more, but that would rule it out for me.

Not sure why Lowrance's website is no longer working, but from the pic that they had, their trandsucer is fixed and doesn't rotate on its own. and Their pdf, handout says "simply by using the trolling motor, the angler has complete control
http://www.lowrance.com/Root/Lowranc.../Spotlight.pdf

We really aren't going to get a good idea of how this works until you can see a video of it in action... Even then if its like the 360, its more impressive while using it in person then by looking at pics or videos.

NMEA2K connection to the foot-pedal ?

So this will not be compatible their ilink version and the new xi5's if im reading this right. Interference problems maybe?

Agreed, it sure sounds like it's fixed (almost has to be) and will be interesting to see how they interface it with a rotating trolling motor. The part I keyed in on was; "The new Lowrance SpotlightScan Sonar transducer offers anglers a meaningful benefit that provides complete picture-like views in front of …” Haha, sure sounds like I’ll be trolling with my bow mount deployed in the future.

From what I can find out about it, the depth finder will get its orientation and rate of turn from the cable drive foot pedal, so if you have an electric steer, you wouldn't know which way the sonar is pointing without looking at the trolling motor head and the depth finder wouldn't know how fast its turning causing blurry images.
