Heading up this Thursday to pursue the Sabaskong muskies. We've got a fair assortment of jakes and grandmas. Would like to add a few cranks to troll this week. What colors should we add? What's hot on Sabaskong?

Also, what's a good shallow trolling bait? From what I hear, the water is just finally getting cool, so we'll still need to be shallow. Our 10" jakes get hung up on us on the shallow side of the boat. What would be a good option for the shallow side?

To my way of thinking Grandma's and Jake's are cranks already.

I'd try Believers or Swim Whiz as my next choice. Actually, I'd be using those as my first choice before the grandma's and jake's but that's just me. With the dual line attachment you can run those fairly shallow or down to 20 feet, which on Sabaskong isn't likely that you'll be trolling that deep. They're really buoyant and should back out of a rock hang up if you give them slack line unless you've really got them hung up. On the shallow eye attachment I don't think a believer is going to run more the 5 or 6 feet deep, maybe not even that deep. Try both the jointed and the solid models.

You could also try shallow raiders and shallow invaders. I'd think that almost any large crankbait that floats at rest and doesn't run more than 5 feet deep should work for you. You could also try trolling Suicks or Bobbies too and pump them as you go. Maybe even try a glide bait like a Phantom?? Phantoms have a wobble to them on a straight troll and when you pump them they'll dart side to side. I don't think they'd run very deep either. Try trolling a surface bait like a Hawg Wobbler too, granted you'll have to go very slow with those.

Trolling jerkbaits and surface lures might seem like an odd idea but Sabaskong is pretty shallow overall, 10 -15 feet deep maximum in a lot of areas and with all the rocks you don't have to get down that deep so in some areas jerkbaits and surface lures just might work? Heck, even a bucktail will not travel very deep when trolled, try a cowgirl. Trolling lures like this work in other lakes during the fall so they should also work there too.

My first choice though would be Believers

I've only fished Sabaskong during July and August during the bloom, so I do know what the structures are like up there even if I haven't actually done any trolling there, but I can't recommend colors as well for the fall as I don't know how well the water clears up. I'd try perch and firetiger at least. Anything with flash.

Something with a little flash is always good. Gold or chart prism tape on anything seems to help. naturals like perches, walleye can be good. superman always a good choice. firetiger, tn shad are also reliable. too many colours to pick from and I have way too many baits.

jakes are always first choice in my boat. grandmas have started off hot this fall so far, but it's only been a couple days.

how much line you running inside with a 10" jake....you will get hung up from time to time, but it shouldn't be constant....40-45 feet runs pretty good and we get up pretty tight on some humps, points, fingers, etc.
