Hopefully someone can help me, I am debating buying a Tuffy 1700 Renegade and it needs to be cleaned and Re Carpeted. I have in the past worked on many boats but they were all Aluminum Boats, this would be the first Fiberglass Boat that I will ever try to Redo.....It just looks like wrapping carpeting around the hatches and storage doors will be very difficult. Plus the large areas to be carpeted make it easy to make a mistake...I was thinking of ripping off all the old carpeting and sand the area and remove all old glue and old carpet and maybe refinish with a textured paint or possibly add vinyl.... Please
if anyone has redone a tuffy please let me know, as I would really like to redo this boat.....thanks Mike

I spent last winter replacing the carpet and a section of the floor in my Tuffy Esox LTD and while it was a lot of work, I was happy with the results. The boat looked great. Don't skimp on carpet quality, you want it to last as long as possible! Lots of good info out there on the web, google and you-tube were very helpful.

I have recently recarpeted my Ranger 692 VS. I can say that it is alot of work but completely worth it. The hardest part of the whole deal is perling off the old carpet andscraping off the old glue, not going to sugar coat it, IT SUCKED! But once you get the carpet and glue off wrapping the new carpet is a breeze. Long story short: 1. Trace out the new carpet with enough extra to trim off about an inch when completely wrapped. 2. Make sure you mark the new carpets pile direction is all the same way when installed in your boat. You can see which way the pile goes by running your hand over the new carpet. One direction will be smooth the other with be rough. If you recarpet two lids that sit next to one another in the boat opposite directions you will absolutely see the difference. One will look lighter than the other. 3. Spread your marine carpet glue on your lid top and and flip it onto your piece of carpet. Push it down a bit then flip it over without sliding the carpet around. Take your hands and rub the carpet down and let it dry. 4. Once dry not its time to glue the outside and inside sides of the lid. Spread the glue one the sides and pull the carpet over the side and then back up the inside of the lid. Take pieces of wood the length of the outside side of the lid and the inside side of the lid and place them on the outside and inside and then clamp them together so the carpet is held in place firmly until the glue dries. 5. Once dry trim off the excess and your done and onto the next one.

Make sure everything is labeled when you take them apart. Makes the reinstall much easier.

Kinda of crash coarse but if you have any questions or need any more help I would be glad to help you out.

Search this forum as this topic has been mentioned many times. Take your time, roll the carpet the same way as you will notice the carpet grain if you dont, use your old carpeting as templates. Those are a few ideas. See this forum for restoration/carpet etc. bassboatcentral.com

To remove old glue and carpet fibers, use a 4.5 inch angle grinder with a medium wire wheel. Wear a mask, safety glasses and protective clothing. It gets pretty messy. I do boat restoration for a living, so if you run into any issues PM me, I'd be happy to help.

Another option when wrapping lids that has worked well for me is to use clothespins all around the lid edges to hold the glue in place while drying. Takes a lot of clothespins, but it works great, they're cheap, and odds are you already have some!

PS...on a somewhat related note, has anyone worked with the Styx River neoprene mats? https://styx-river.com/products/?category=1&subcategory=6
Comes in a roll/sheet like carpet, it's cushioned, and it's camo. My new-to-me rig (1660 Pro-V) is going to get a cast-and-blast conversion (camo wrap, seats, etc), and I'm tinkering with pulling the carpet and replacing with the neo mats... Would love to hear from anyone who's used this stuff...

Here's a link to the Tuffy I re-carpeted... 9 years ago, but same concept.

I recarpeted a 1700 renegade. They are tougher than some other boats if you have a model with a top cap because the carpet runs up underneath it. I ended up removing the rub rail (I installed a new one after) and all the additional screws that hold the top cap in place, and then elevated the top cap with 2x4's between the top cap and the hull so I could get all the carpet out and new carpet in. Without doing this I think you'd have to just run the carpet up under the top cap only as far as you could reach. Otherwise, it was a do-able project, just a lot of work. Save the old carpet you remove to use as a template for cutting the new carpet. I used Goof Off to remove the old adhesive from the floor, acetone for final prep, and 3M High Strength 90 for the new adhesive. The finished product was outstanding. Good luck!
