Subject: Calcutta 401D Casting Break vs. Calcutta TE

Hi everyone,

I got a Calcutta D like 1 month ago and I have found that I get more overruns with it compared to my TE. I have 4 breaking weights engaged and even if I almost lock down the breaking knob it will make overruns.

My Te does not make any overruns at all with 4 breaking weights engaged.

Does anyone have an idea why the new D reel has a weaker vbs system?

Weaker might be wrong, but it does not function as well as the TE.

Thanks in advance.

- Ole

I can literally cast my Calcutta d as hard as possible, leave my thumb off the spool and never have an over run. Something's messed up wit yours

with how many weights engaged? And do you tighten the casting knob?

I'll say this pikemaster says that that tension knob is only to adjust the spool play from side to side and should not be tight like that you will where out the fiber or copper bushing in the knob just take it apart and adjust the spool brakes accordingly. You will wear a hole in the end of the knob and chew up the spindle end. I have both reels my D way outcasts my te. The te is nice because of the ease of adjustability.

It could be the D is a smoother reel and needs more break to get it to lessen the overruns.

I have experienced the same, definitely more overruns with the D's, if you are not awake. I think this is due to two things, Larger spools, and no engaging levelwind to add some breakage to the spool. The 400D's, cast's exactly the same way as my Trinidad 12(same wild free running spool)

You simply need more thumb feeling to cast the 400D's. But then, long casts, great reel!. Just be sure that the levelwind is centered, before casting.

PS, also don't fill the spool, up to the edge with line, that helps a lot.

I have a couple 400D's and a 300D, just set on factory settings and they cast fine. Not any different than my other reels, the calcutta D's shine once you start to retrieve. BR

Thank you everyone! I went out in the garden and did some casting. It is better now but I guess I am too used to the TE.

I agree with Ole, will have to take it apart and adjust the brakes.

It's hard to get any over runs on any reels when you don't apply ur thumb. TE's, D's, abu's will obviously "over run" if ur not using ur thumb. Who wants to set the tension in the spool so tight that u can only cast 15 ft? Never played with any weights on my TE's or D's and never had any problems. Most of us were given a thumb for a reason....

Thumb or not... my d is definitely easier to birdsnest than my te was. Love my d, but it definitely takes more breaks to keep it under control. I think I have 5 on, can't remember for sure, but don't have to crank the knob as tight with that many brakes on. Will still chuck a 4 oz weagle 70 yards, way more than enough.

Definite more over runs than a toro. I put 5-6 brakes on my d's. Believe it has something to do with the disengaging level wind. Great reels but why they disengage the level wind is far beyond my understanding.

I have 2 400Ds with 80 Power Pro slick cast control knob set the same and same rod. One with 3 brakes on and the other with 2 brakes on. Throwing a Dancin Raider with 2 brakes on I would get 18=19 Same lure with 3 brakes on would get me 14=15 ...that's back and forth level wind. That 3rd brake on really slows it down. I cant imagine 4 brakes on. I did notice fighting off backlashes when the reel was new. Seems to get better after a little break in.

I replaced all 4 of my TE's with D's, and am regretting it... I would sacrifice a little casting distance for the level wind not disengaging and for ease of adjusting the brakes.

All 4 of my D's act a little different. One, I can cast as hard as i want with no thumbing and no backlash, another is almost as good, then the other 2 are terrible. All with factory brake settings. I will have to start playing with the brakes on the 2 "bad" ones.

I also found that filling spool to about 90% helped reduce the backlashes. I have not taken the reel apart yet to adjust brakes, but there looks to be a lot more to it than the TE... Any advice?

I am wondering how consistently the factory sets the brakes?

It is probably more of a question how consistent are angler casting skills;-)

The rod has a lot to do with how the reel works. Some rod tips will backlash any reel.

Good point on the rods influence on the reel "performance" That is a very valid contributor. Last night, I checked all of my reels and they were all set with 3 brakes. I changed them all to 4 and plan to give that a shot.

It was easy to change the brakes, but i mis the quick access from the TE's. I also do not like the fact that it is easy to scratch the reel when removing/installing screws.

Check your brakes to make sure they are installed properly from the factory. On my reel, of the two that were set from the factory, one of them was not on correctly - the little tab on the brake itself was facing the wrong direction. Result is that the brake doesn't move freely and therefore useless. To test this see if the brakes moves up and down easily.
