| Message Subject: Crimp or Tie? | |||

| Anyone out there know of a way to tie 7-strand leaders? Or would it just be better to double crimp them? Any suggestions? M | |||

| For 7-strand a double crimp is important. You can wrap tie like you do stiff wire, but you must epoxy the wraps and do at least 7 wraps. | |||

| I've seen too many leaders break at the crimp for me to trust them any longer. I believe the crimp makes a sharp edge for the leader to bend against. I make all my own 7-strand leaders and tie them all. I've never had one break... I hope I didn't just jinx myself! Craig | |||

| MuskyMike, I double crimp all of my 7 strand leaders. What I mean isthat I use relativley long sleeves and I use two of them per each end of the leader. I crimp the 1st sleeve (the one closest to either end) with two crimps. I then crimp the 2nd sleeve only once so as to not put such a large kink in the leader at this point. I also cover the crimps with shrink tube to help alleviate any sharp edges etc. Works great for me. I cover all my solid leader twists etc. with shrink tube as well. No use leaving an area for you line to be caught in and cut off. Remember if you have a weakspot those Muskies will find it right quick. [:bigsmile:] | |||

| I too have seen leaders break at the crimps. Granted, it was not very many, but to me one is too many. I will use only 7-stand leaders that are tied. The three that I use are light ones that I tie myself, Bait Rigs and Bucher. Other important parts of the leader are a quality ball bearing swivel and either a Coast Lock or Cross Lock snap. Yes, the type of snap is a personal preference, but I think the quality ball bearing swivel is a must. Just thought I would cast my 2 cents out there. Chuck | |||

| Hellraiser's are twisted and then heat fused. I had one that I put on almost religiously last year and just some of the nylon coating tore a little but no strength reduction at all. Bait Rigs, Bucher all make good leaders also. Rob | |||

| What do you think would be the best way to tie Sevenstrand? Wrap or some type of knot? M | |||
| |||
| I use a knot but I've seen and used wraps (Donnie Hunt's sucker leaders) that worked just as well. The knot I tie goes like this (tough to describe); Tie an overhand about 1.5" down from the end of the wire. Snug it down so that the wire can just go back through it (but don't go back through it yet). Stick the tag end through whatever you're tying to(swivel, snap), then run the tag end through the overhand. Loop the tag end around the standing wire and then back through the loop that you just created by going around the standing end and snug it down with a pair of pliers. I don't know if that description works or not... good luck. Craig | |||

| I agree wholeheartedly with Craig. I tie all of mine, and have never used a crimping sleeve, only for the fact I don't want to accidently have one break at the pinch. Craig and I have tied many a leader over the years. To date, I've not had one break....knock wood! I do one overhand knot, then wrap the tag end around 5 to 7 times. I then snip off the excess. This year, I will be using shrinktubing to cover the tag end, to insure I don't pick up any weeds. Just me .01 cent worth! Donnie [:bigsmile:] [:bigsmile:] [:bigsmile:] | |||

| For are point of do not buy crimped leaders!! We lost the biggest Musky at the boat because of a crimped leader that pulled apart at the crimp!!!! | |||

| http://www.stren.com/stren/knot4.htm Hi Mike If you don't mind a Brit. butting in here - we don't have a lot of Muskies in the UK do we. I tie all my 'toothy' critter traces in stranded wire using the "Non-Slip Mono loop knot" - try link above. It is IMHO the only way to go with stranded wires that are supple enough to be tied. I've used it on wires with breaking strains between 6 and 60 pounds although you could certainly use it on wire up to 150 lbs b/s. I've tied mono's upto 400 lb b/s with this knot also so it is quite versitile, it's great for Braid too when you need a loop. Never let me down and very easy to tie. Hope this helps some regards Jeremy | |||
