Posts: 46 Location: Plymouth, MN | The hook cutter I have cuts through most hooks but not the thickest ones I own. I noticed Bucher sells a cutter for $13. Is this one strong enough to get through the thickest hooks or do I need to bite the bullet and buy a Knipex?

Posts: 439 Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Have used cheapies in the past. they work fine for awhile but they don't last. I'm a hooking cutting machine in the fall and would never be without two pairs of knipex. Have 3 seasons on the original pair and all it ever needs is a little reel oil to keep lubed up. I always have a brand new spare in storage in case something crazy happens. Get them online from chadstoolbox.com - best price I've found. Add a wrist loop with some rope and it might save you from donating a couple to your local waters.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Never had experience with the Bucher cutter or any others besides Knipex. I bought the Knipex about 7-8 years ago. Cut many hooks with it, a lot of them 7/0 and 8/0 hooks. It has saved the lives of many fish, some of them trophies. Some have been hooked deep in the throat, in their gills, and required fine surgery to snip a large hook using just the very beak of the cutter. Without it, I'd have had to rip hooks out of gills with pliers, or likely use the back of the jaws of a cheaper cutter, with a high chance of cutting the gills in the process. Ask yourself how confident you are that a $13 cutter will be able to snip an 8/0 with it's beak (left handed, never know when a fish might attach itself to your right hand) several years after buying it. I have not used cheaper ones but would not have confidence in their ability to do so. The Knipex is a very worthwhile investment. I literally would not go musky fishing if I didn't have one in my boat. Tucker

Posts: 59 | If your ever unlucky enough to have a fish on one side of a treble and some part of your flesh on the other, that 20-30$ difference for the Knipex will seem like the best money youve ever spent.

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | In my boat at all times I have two pair of knipex and two pair of Felco's...every time I cut hooks I grab the Felco's....best I have ever used and mine are probably 10 yrs old and have cut about a zillion pounder hooks, and other size 7-8 hooks. I have both the C3 and C7's. These things are the best I have used. http://www.felcostore.com/wirecablecutters?gclid=CKaS5d-1xrgCFctcMg...

Posts: 130 Location: Duluth, MN | The Bucher cutters look EXACTLY like some cheep ones I bought from Harbor Freight for I think $4 a pair. I keep these with my walleye/bass gear. For Musky stick with the Knipex. They will cut hooks, but the amount of effort required is night and day.

Posts: 3 | Felco cutters are the only cutters. buy them once drill a hole thru the handle & secure them to the boat. Ive had them since 1998, Before that, well lets talk about the other brands. buy 2-3 pairs of cutters cut 2 big hooks & well u have a pair of felco. Why do u think all the steel guys use them!!! Stainless steel Made in Switzerland. A GIANT NO BRAINER
