Many new names on Muskiefirst and questions about getting started. We all want a good pic of our trophy right? But just as importantly we should want the trophy fish that just gave us a trill.. to live and grow right? A few of the videos I've seen posted recently (both here and other sites) of some very nice muskies, make me cringe. Big fish out of the water too long = delayed mortality. This has been covered before but always a good reminder:
1) Leave fish in net as much as possible
2) Have camera ready, 2-3 good pics is enough or get a camera with "burst"
3) Measure quickly and try to protect the slime of the fish.
4) **Very important** Get good at having a "timer" in your head. A big muskie should never be out of the water for over 60 seconds - IMO.

Here is a video of my buddy Brian with an awesome 50" LOTW muskie, this is his 12th muskie ever and second over 50" (lucky dude right?) This fish's head is out of the water for almost 50 seconds...this is max i want to see and you can almost here the clock ticking in my head. Good luck everyone, catch and release is working, we can all protect the resource that we love.

Appreciate the reminder Justin, but in my mind 50 seconds is an eternity. Call me extreme, but I cut that recommendation in half.

I don't disagree, that is why I'm saying hurry up in the above video, Brian is understandably excited and wants to get good pics and measurements ... watch most uncut video's (you tube)... many muskies bumped and photo'd are out over 60 seconds even by some pretty experienced guys (fish talked about on here) Your "timer" needs to start as soon as you lift the head from water (untangle the fish from the net first) - When you have everything ready and get good at it (assuming you need to bump the fish) the entire process is going to take about 30 seconds. Special fish 45 seconds is not unreasonable - bottom line the less time out of the water the better. Anything under 45" I generally release like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg9qiQMJYhg

Glad you agree. 50 seconds is too long, 30 or less is optimal.

A good reminder especially since the water temps are up there right now as well. Thanks Justin!

Water temps hit 80-82 last night on the stained water (northern WI). Cold front can't come soon enough.

Great advice. I realized after buying a Gopro a couple years back that almost all the fish I catch are between 20-30 seconds for a measurement and photo, except the water released fish obviously which is usually anything 40" and under.
