Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | I have been using 400TE 'S for the last 12 years. I bought a 400D heard all good things with this reel got a good deal so I bought one. I ended up putting it on my bucktail rod .I got more back lashes then I have in years.I like the TE set the breaks and fish.I only used it abought 2 hrs im not ready to give up on it but its no TE.i also bought a Tranx PG that reel rocks .Playing with it last Friday throwing double 10s.seeing nothing I put a Mepps musky magnum took one of one of the breaks off I was casting further then I was throwing the double 10s.The best thing I put a 40 in the net.So why did Shimano do away with the breaking system ? Posts: 256 Location: plant earth | I like my 400d, but I love my 400 te. As far as the brakes go I took the reel apart and if I remember right it has six useable brakes I set my up with three on three off. It's a good reel. I don't really mind the bigger side with the brake adjustment for the te. I really am not a fan of how you would adjust the 400d. You gotta take the thing completely apart. Now you got little screws and parts to keep track of. if you are fishing in inclimant weather it could be pretty frustrating. But I do like the bigger paddle handle that's nice.

Posts: 1660 Location: central Wisconsin | I had backlashes with mine also last fall, I took it apart and set out one more brake than what the factory had and it casts like a dream. When I bought my second one I did the same thing before making one cast with it. They are sort of a bugger to take apart so be careful as the screws are not attached to the side plate and watch your screwdriver so it doesn't slip off and scratch the finish.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | WoW I find it hard to believe when guys buy a $400.00 reel U don't read the owner manual ????? The Shimano Calcutta 300D and the 400D have 6 spool brakes, Shimano sets the reel up with 3 on and 3 off, open up the reel and set 4-6 brakes on, pull out on the brake, this is in the Owner Manual, and close it up and cast. Make sure you are using some of the new braid in 8 weave yarn like Suffix 832, I would stick with 80lb max for the D reels, 80lb will cast alot better then 100. READ the OWNER MANUAL on your reels !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | I felt a bit flush last year so I decided to go out and get 4 new Calcutta's as a step up from my 30 yr. old Ambassadors. Glad I got the 400TE's, not knowing a thing about them. All I can say is WOW!!...what a change. I'm a bit of a bonehead about reels but it seems a good pick, totally by accident. Hope you get some resolution from this thread MH47. Jeremy.

Posts: 752 | PIKEMASTER - 6/19/2013 8:23 PM WoW I find it hard to believe when guys buy a $400.00 reel U don't read the owner manual ????? !!!!!!!!!!!!!! We don't all share the love of minutai related to reels as you Pike Master. I have not looked at manual since I bought a Trindad back in the day as it was fundamentally different than the others I was using. I have a 400D and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite reels and I have had no backlash issues.
