How long do you fish a lure before you switch to a new one? Are you more likely to change lures or move to a new spot?

1. When I lose confidence in a lure. That could be anywhere from a few casts to 6 hours.
2. When I get bored throwing it. That could also be anywhere from a few casts to 6 hours.
3. When fish are just following it, lazily.
4. When it starts to hurt

Like most, I usually have 3-4 rods rigged up with lures that I think are right for the water I'm on. Usually these 3-4 lures cover every situation I'll see on that particular body of water. These are waters that I know well, and know what works. In the course of a day I might change a couple of those out for something different. So, you could say I'm much more likely to change spots than lures, but then again, I hit the water with a pretty good idea of what spots I'm going to fish. I might change things up based on something I'm seeing (or not seeing), but hitting multiple spots is always part of the plan.

Will you throw all 3 or 4 lures in one area before moving on?

I try and switch at each new spot if nothing is moving on them. If it's a lake I know well, sometimes I just keep the same one on. Depends on weather, fatigue, boredom...

No, more like 1 or 2 usually. Sometimes I might make a 2nd pass on the same spot, but use a different lure that hits it from a little different angle. For example, first time through I might run a bucktail. If nothing shows itself but I believe for whatever reason that fish are there, maybe I back off a bit and run something deeper.

I don't think it's productive to focus on trying lures until something 'works', instead concentrate on putting a proven lure in front of a hungry muskie.

A tangent question:

If you get a follow, but the fish doesn't eat, do you alter your presentation? If yes, what goes into your decision making process?

Background on the question: I heard Borovsky speak this winter and he stated that when he gets a follow and the fish flares off before the boat he takes it as a signal that the presentation is off.

Are you talking about fish that seem to freak out when they see the boat? I take that as a negative response to the boat (or my ugly mug), not my presentation. If you just mean fish that follow but won't bite, then yeah, I'll maybe toss something else in there, but only after I've given it a few more looks at the lure that originally piqued the fish's interest.

I agree with Josh. In my experience the fish that flare off, or seem to heavily 'spook' just out from the boat, are often active and catchable fish, compared to a lazy follow that just hangs out and has a cup of coffee by the boat for awhile before swimming off. Depending on depth the fish can be moving to reposition for a strike from beneath the boat. In super shallow water, we've seen where we have to circle back on these fish, perhaps with another lure, in order to catch them.
