Location: Ottawa, Ont | So lost the biggest muskie of my life tonight which I believe judging on her size and other indications like her bulging eyes and massive shoulders that it was a 50+ size. As I made the initial hook set it felt solid and followed up with two more sold tugs to make sure the hooks where in. Is this a mistake? because you add a split second of slack in your line can this cause you to lose a fish like in this circumstance. |

| One good hard set is all you need if you connect hard. If you don't think the hooks moved set it again. |

| hard to say if you made a mistake, everyone that catches many muskies...also loses muskies, especially the first few seconds of the fight...sometimes the just dont get a hook is a place that will hold.. its part of the game..that being said I NEVER set the hook more than once. Losing a nice one stings, best thing you can do is go get another - good luck! |

| the more you set the hook the bigger the hole you made,so you will just get more chance to lose it.1 is plenty enough |

Location: Lake St.Clair | I only set the hook once... hit them with the hammer of thor on initial hook set and thats what I do. My fishing partner just had thr same thought a few days ago over lost fish... hammer of thor and Im sticking to it! |

| trolling no hookset required. strong smaller diameter wire hooks penetrate best..
many fish grab the bait on top. no hooks there. keep fishing it happens occasionly. |

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | One hook set and then live with what you get. Nothing but bad things can happen if you drop your rod tip to reset.
Many times a hook is never embedded in a musky at all, the only thing holding it attached to a fish is a razor sharp point and constant pressure, much like a grappling hook. If that pressure leaves, so does the fish. How many times have you dropped your rod when a fish enters the net and the bait immediately falls out.
