Posts: 73 | Just wondering if people have had success running all black cranks and twitch baits. Done well on mostly black but painted up a bunch of all black. Curious on feedback.

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | I have done well on several all black Bucktails meaning blades, deer hair and flashbou all black. Both double 10's and double 9 Indiana's. I have never sold many All black cranks to anyone. Of thousands of lures Ive sold maybe three all black were ordered. I have had an all black Crane 205 for a decade and its never been bit. I have tried all black Little Claws and have never been bit. I even tried trolling all black Slashers on Lake St. Clair ( and you would think they would eat anything out there) and never been bit. I dont for the life of me know why but it seems like another color is needed to make black work in a crank. Black barred perch with white base, Black and gold, Black and silver, black and Orange etc. That is my Honest opinion from 20 years of experience. Mike

Posts: 73 | Thanks Mike. What about at night? One would think that the all black profile would have success?

Black cranks are really good, not good like black plastics,or bucktails and the others but they rock specially on dark condition,a little bit of silver glitter on the side is dynamite. The thing that broke my hart is when i pay the same price from ultra sexy perch to a boring black cranks.

My 53.5 PB on gear and 52 PB on fly were both on black or black/orange with no frills....just flat black.

I normally throw Black Buck Tails at Night. Or dark colored top water. I dont fish at night that often though. What has really surprised me though is how few Black(all black) lures I actually sell. Maybe three or 4 since 1999. I just took an order for an all Black Slasher. Another order for an all Black Hybrid with a Chartruse top. Two in one year that is a record. In contrast 1,235 baits this year so far and most of them were some natural color or some gaudy bright wild thing. Mike

Posts: 388 Location: Northern Illinois | I know black topwaters are effective - both day and night for me. I would expect cranks that float high in the water column would have the same effect. That's why I'm kind of surprised that the black Crane didn't seem to work. I would think it would have the same - silhouette against the sky - benefits that a top water would have. I have allways been leary of using all black on deep diving lures, that the fish may see from the side or in front of them (and not looking up against the sky)as the black may not stand out or contrast with anything. In these cases I'm thinking other contrasting colors on the lure may give a flashing or strobe effect that will get noticed and would be more productive.

We had numerous guys ask us to paint up ALL black Livid Fish. That was opposed to the black with the small red "chin". My experience has been that it is quite popular.

I've fished a river that's usually clay colored, but sometimes clears up a bit during a drought. Last fall we caught 5 or 6 skis on a Believer that's all black with a white skunk stripe on the top & bottom. It shows up really well in that water color. Haven't used that bait much in stained water yet, but I will. Oh, no rattles on that lure either!

All black crane bait, if you can find one, is a great bait.
