My normal rig for pulling my Ranger 690 is an old 5.7 Suburban. It's up north right now but works great, and if I recall it has overdrive, drive, and two lower gears. I tow the boat in drive, or whatever the next lower gear than OD is. My backup winter vehicle is an '02 Ford Expedition with a 5.4 l engine. Should have the power but I'm not as familiar with the gearing, as I rarely use it. However it's been pressed into short term service as the tow rig. It has either drive or overdrive (D), plus two lower gears. In the first lower gear the rpm's seem to be higher than a guy should tow in, over 3000. So I've been using the highest of the 3 gears, the D. Rpm's are lower, but it seems to lack the umph needed on hills. Am I risking the tranny by using drive, or risking it more by using the lower gear at higher rpm's? What say you vehicle guys? Thanks

use it in d, then shift down to 2 on the hills or you can have your computer tuned.

Use it in drive...that rig should have the button to turn off the overdrive on the end of the shifter. Dont bother putting it in 2nd on hills....you will forget one time and you could burn the tranny up if you stop and you take off in 2nd.

My tow vehicle doesn't have the button to turn off overdrive so I leave mine in 3. I have Overdrive, 3,2,1.

That works too

I picked up my 21" Offshore boat (appx 3800lbs) in South Carolina and brought it back home (980 miles) with my '04 Ford Explorer 4.6l (220,000 miles) with no problems. Of course out of overdrive.

Hunterjoe got me squared away. As Fred points out it has an overdrive off button. So drive it is, maybe overdrive on flat highway if its not shifting. Thanks all
