I'm gearing up for my second year of musky fishing and I want to make sure I have the right tools in the boat and I'm hoping I can get a list of what and what brand. I know I need a bolt cutter but I'd prefer not to pay the money for a Knipex son are their any other option that are good? Also will any old needle nose pliers do or should I be looking for something specific? As for a split ring pliers, I assume they aren't all created equal. I was looking at getting some split rings to make attaching leaders to some lures easier and some of them mentioned that a typical split ring wouldn't work well. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks

When there is a hook in your hand or arm and one in the fish...You WILL wish you bought a Knipex.

There are others that work. I dont pay for knipex either. That's ridiculous. I have some frabil needle nose with built in split ring pliers that work great. I would just say, the longer the pliers the better.

I'm not sure if the Lowes' chain extends to your area, but if it does check out their 8" mini bolt cutters. They're around $10 and are under a lifetime no-hassle guarantee.

Generally speaking I believe any needle nose will do, as long as it is strong enough to remove a musky-sized treble. I keep a couple around with varying lengths, but I'd say the ones I personally use the most frequently are around 8" long. None are incredibly fancy.

I use Bass Pro 6-1/2" Split Ring Pliers. Cost around $7 and have performed well. My dad has a pair from Rapala which are also nice.

Here are the tools that I would recommend. Brands are up to you, although I will recommend the knipex cutter and a lead master split ring pliers.

One other essential "tool" that I don't have pictured is a first aid kit, you should definitely have one.

For me, an 11 inch bent tip (45 degree) long nose pliers works perfect. I usually lift the fish by the hook and with a twist, the body weight of the fish pulls it off. Jaw spreaders and hook cutters will help for the 10 percent of the time when the pliers don't work. I always wear a Lindy fish handling glove on my left hand--I am right handed.

Lowe's , sells Knipex,...... Best there is...... Early on in my life, I spent $100 for several Cheaper pair and they couldn't even begin to hold the jock of a Knipex.

Jballs' photo is pretty solid. I would add a hookpick to that assortment. You will rarely need it, but when you do, you'll be really glad you have the thing. They are only $10-ish, so not a bank breaker.

I echo all the Knippex comments. Best tool out of them all and worth every penny.

I agree also on the Nipex, you'll go through several cheap cutters long before 1 Nipex... Cheap investment when you have a 20 pound fish on 1 hook and a 5/0 or 7/0 buried in your body, like others been there done that and had the cheapies fail....

One thing I do is double that jaw spreader and tape them together. I've had singles pop out too easy.

Split ring pliers? Rapala makes one that has met all my muskie needs. Your needle nose pliers better be at least 8" long. Bold cutters? I use my teeth. Well,...

Propster nailed it here.

My cheapy bolt cutters work fine have had them for 5+ years and I use them as much out of the boat as I do in the boat. If/when I have need to replace them, maybe I'll pick up a knipex but I'm in no rush. And yes I have needed them in an emergency situation - a fish on one hook and the other hook in my shorts very near the family jewels.
