Posts: 161 Location: New Jersey | Does anyone swap out the snaps on Stealth Walk the Dog leaders with smaller ones? The #5 Stay Loks have trouble going throught the eyes of some of my baits like the Stalkers and Hughes Rivers. Anyone switching them out for 4's or 4.5' Stay Loks or any others?

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | I haven't used the walk the dog ones but there's no reason you can't. I use some of the 4:5s on smaller baits and haven't had one fail. Just like any others if they're showing signs of wear swap them out. Good luck hope it helps.

Posts: 2097 | I throw a split ring on the bait. I feel I get better action with one anyways.

Location: Contrarian Island | I prefer to use a split ring on side to side baits like these and topwaters.... if you have to use a snap, gently bend out the end of the snap 10 -15 degrees and it will go on

Posts: 750 Location: Minneapolis, MN | Speaking of leader snaps not fitting through eyes on baits, is there any reason one wouldn't throw a split ring on swim baits like Bulldawgs or SuperDs? I picked up some my first fluorocarbon leaders from Thorne Bros and I couldn't connect it to my Mag SuperD.

Posts: 2037 Location: lansing, il | WTDs come standard with a #5 Stay Lock. If you order leaders direct we will put any size snap or ring on that you request at the time of ordering. I am sure some of the retailers that carry our product will gladly swap snaps out if they have them in stock if you ask them to as well. Its not a bad thing to keep some extra snaps on hand as opening and closing them over time does weaken them. If you like the size of the #5 snap and it wont fit thru the eye on your lure, you can also add a split ring to the lure and snap to the split ring. Thanks

Location: Contrarian Island | always put a split ring on a dawg/super d if you use snaps....not sure why but many guys have had snaps open up on dawgs when they put the snap directly to the bait,...alllways put a split ring on the dawg, then snap to that....

Posts: 8842 | There are a few lures that a #5 won't fit on, so I just put a split ring on the front. Suicks, HR'S, most rubber baits... A few people have mentioned just bending out the end a bit. I've done that. Makes me nervous. Can't imagine how a fish could possibly torque that snap on a flouro leader enough to make the snap come undone or break just because you bend the end a bit. Still.. Makes me nervous.

Is there a certain size or range of split ring that I should be looking for? This will only be my 2nd year musky fishing so I'm still learning.

Posts: 906 Location: Canada | I'm not using Stealth jerk bait leaders but my set up consists of no swivel (straight tied to the leader) and I am not using a snap but rather use a split ring. When you get used to it, to change out baits or what have you - the time to get the bait off the split ring and add another isn't much different than using a snap. All my casting and trolling is done with a staylok snap but ALL my baits have a permanent high quality split ring attached to the line tie that I can put the snap to (always from the bottom so the Staylok stands straight up and down).

Posts: 120 | I use # 4.5 staylocks for my own personal leaders that I tie... Find that size fits the best for me and the majority of the lures I fish. I like the #3's also for smaller/downsizing lures.

Posts: 115 Location: Birch Run | I wouldn't use any snaps on any lures...Single strand tooth proof, no swivel, welded Stealth ring at the end of the leader. Put a good split ring on every lure. The ring will stop split rings from opening on their own and will never break. I have had the same rings for years I keep re-using. I do use snaps to hold my leaders to my rods while traveling and thats it. Don't get in the habit of re-using split rings thats why I like to have one on every lure not one on the leader itself.
