Posts: 568 Location: Lake St Clair | For $300 I can't really find any better. Looking for a fish finder and GPS combo, nothing fancy but don't want a tiny screen. Should I be looking at a different model or brand? http://store.humminbird.com/products/604319/581i_HD_DI_Combo Thanks

Posts: 256 Location: plant earth | I was in the same boat. Looked and looked waited. Decided on the humminbird. I almost got that 1 but I wanted I pilot link cause i watched the videos on it. Awsome stuff I fish alone alot so it made more sense. alot easier for me to fish and less boat control and got the 958 instead. But that unit is rock solid for the $$$$$. I really like the gray for the DI. Very easy to see.

Posts: 58 | If its all you can afford its a solid unit. I used to have that unit and hated the small screen. If you use a map chip things get jumbled up real quick unless you zoom way in. The contour lines run together and make it really hard to read. I would say that if you have the time to shop watch ebay and craigs list for a deal in a bigger unit.

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | I bought the 581i. I don't use the mapping much so I don't find the smaller screen a problem. What I don't like about it the most is it doesn't seem very sensitive. I have an impulse 2800 that is probably 20 years old and I can easily see a 2 ounce weight below the boat with it. With this unit I can't see a 20 ounce weight! I have tried and tried adjusting the sensitivity, on and off fish ID, etc, but can't get it to show what I know is below the boat which I find very disappointing given this unit is so much newer than the old impulse. It does show fish but again I wonder what I'm seeing. It does show the anchor when I drop it, lol. The unit has given me no problems, the GPS works well, but I wouldn't buy one again for the above mentioned reasons. Jed

Posts: 568 Location: Lake St Clair | Thanks for the input. Anyone have other suggestions? $550 max Fishfinder and GPS. Don't care much about SI or DI.

Posts: 291 Location: Oconomowoc, WI | I know it's more than 550, but the elite-7 for 599 seems to be a lot of bang for the buck. You won't regret the bigger screen.

Posts: 30 | I'm a bird guy, and while I don't have the model you're looking at, go with the largest screen you can afford. I have a 10" at the console and 2 matrix sized units at the bow. I'd like to get a 10" for the bow when funds permit. Just my .02
