So with all this talk of fishing with suckers with no hooks, and still getting them in the net, does it count as a line? Say here in MN can I fish a hookless sucker off the back while casting in the fall?

Posts: 546 Location: MN | I'm with Shawn on this one. Wouldn't you think that if you are trying to catch a fish on it in the first place, that it probably qualifies as a line? Best not to try and dance around the words of the law. You'll get burned and give yourself, and other muskie fishermen a bad name.

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | Hmm, In Michigan a decoy is not counted as a legal line unless it has a hook in it. Most guys who spear here use a harness(with a live sucker) or an artificial decoy with no hooks then they still get their maximum number of tip ups out. That is Michigan law as I know it. This is a real good question for your D.N.R. . Each state may have different opinions on how to interpret a fishing line that does not have a hook on it. You could call it a decoy in all fairness. I have been fishing a no strike rig (hook less) for several years. The only answer to your question comes from YOUR D.N.R. . Mike

Posts: 69 | In Minnesota a spearing decoy needs hooks to be counted as a line. You can have your decoy(no hooks) not counted your spear(counts as one line) and one other line tipup panfish jig whatever.

Posts: 833 | If bass guys are chucking them with 5 baits attached in MN they are fishing illegally. You can fish the 'bama rig in MN, just rig the arms with blades and trail a single bait off the center.

Posts: 373 Location: Maine Township, MN | Yes, in MN you can spear and have another line down. Personally, I would think it would be a grey area if you could dangle a hookless decoy and still cast another line. Almost certainly, our DNR would find a way to slap you with something for doing it. Another thought... How about if you dangled a stringer of legally caught game fish off the side? Hmmmm..... Edited by nocturnalmotors 4/9/2013 7:57 AM

Posts: 546 Location: MN | It wasn't an attack on you, sorry if it seemed that way. Just had/seen too many times where people try to skirt the laws for their own benefit and ends up effecting everyone through many different ways ie. the fishery, political goal, unity as a group of muskie fishermen.

Maybe off topic here but... Doesn't it seem like a bad idea to put that much force on a Muskie's internal organs? Hook or no hook?

Posts: 16 | i find this to be a interesting discussion because awhile back in in-fisherman there was an article i think about larry dahlberg who when trolling used several lines with decoy lines out with no hooks on and that didnt count as a line. anyone else read this article?
