Is the Licking River fishable by jon boat from Cave Run Dam to the Ohio river? Are the muskie more concentrated closer to Cave Run? Looking to take my boy on a float trip looking for more action water than trophy water. Thanks, Tim

I would float toward cave run from between maysville and flemingsburg.

There is a good ramp at the dam. If they are releasing water it is navigable but be careful. Swift moving water and timber is dangerous! Below the ramp at the dam access is difficult. I would hate to get stuck downstream with motor trouble. The only other access points with boat ramps that I am aware of are Clay Wildlife Management area and Blue Licks Battle Field St Park. There are a few low water crossings that are very muddy until mid summer.

I have fished it in a canoe during low water periods when riffles were less than 6" deep and i had to drag over and around fallen trees in the river.

Bruce is right on, Not the best water around I would not take a youngster on it to learn how to fish.

Difficult to fish due to, water or low numbers of fish? Are there many fish between Flemingsburg and Maysville?

Hey tjeep, by "action water" are you talking about action with musky hook-ups?

If so, and you just want to get out and paddle around in a canoe and have a good chance at catching fish, why not just take your canoe back Scotts Creek at Cave Run and fish around. Easy place to paddle around and we have always done really well fishing that area. Also, we learned in the gulf while catching spanish and king mackerel, and have put it into practice around here, you can paddle around with xraps trailing behind your canoe and catch musky... Hope this helps.
