I'm looking for everything I need to know about keeping my reels in good care. I'm lookin or how to take it apart, clean it, and lube it. What type of oil and grease do you use and where do you apply it? Pictures would be great as well. I have an Avid AC300 and a c4 6600. Can I do the same to my revo bass reels?

I've taken em to reel shops before and they usually hold on to em for weeks. Plus I want to know how to do it myself!

There are some good videos on You Tube...also, it seems as though a number of the Muskies inc. clubs invite a reel repair guy to their meetings to give a seminar/ tutorial every once in a while.

Fever,
Last year Abu Garcia had a booth at the Georges Muskie Expo (MN). Look into that they would take one of your reels apart and clean it for you.
Shimano had reps there that instructed you how to disassemble your reel and clean it your self. Both were well worth the price of admision.

Best show of the year- I can't wait

Pimp My Rod and Reel will have a booth at the MN Show, so stop on by and I will show you how to reoil and grease your reels the right way.
Also anyone that brings 3 or more reels to the show to drop off to get Detailed, Tuned and Reoil / Greased will get a $30.00 5" Double Paddle Power Handle for FREE. See U at the Show.

Here's my advice:

1. Start with your reel schematic.
2. Pay attention to what you are taking off and how it came off.
3. As you remove parts, line them up in the odrer in which they came apart, facing the same direction. Nut, handle, washer, star drag, AR bearing, side plate, etc.
4. If you get to a point where you look at something and think "wow. This might be tough", take a picture or two before you take it a aprt so you can see visually how it goes back together.
5. Once you have everything apart, clean the parts one at a time with a toothbrush and dish soap. I use three bowls for this - two with about 50% soap and water, and one with plain water to rinse.
6. Lay parts on a paper towel to dry, again, keeping them in order
I use the blue Penn reel grease on anything with teeth, everything else just gets a small drop of oil. Small!

The first few reels are a challenge, but as long as you take your time and pay attention to where the little washers and such came from (like the one underneath the main drive gear), it's not all that complicated. Puttig the reel back together is idiot proof when you have all the parts in order.

About the only thing I have messed up more than once is having the spool weights extended to where they are in the way of the spool fitting back in the frame, and trying to screw the reel back together. Bends the tabs, smashes the weights. Bad.

Whatever you do, make sure that when you sit down to tear apart a reel that you have enough time to finish it and put it back together. If you leave it sitting apart for a week or two, you'll have a much harder time remembering what went where.

There are several places for schematics. I have been using the ones on the site that is linked below. Also +1 for Alantani.com That site shows pics and step by step of reel tear downs and and put backs.

I get $25.00 a reel to Detail, Tune and Relube a reel. On your AC 300 I can add a bearing to the drive shaft replacing a plastic bushing that always wears out, when you get the reel back it will be better and smoother then new, your ABU would be a good reel to learn how to do yourself, bring it to the MN show and I can show U how to take it apart and reoil and grease it.

2 thumbs up for pikemaster I just had him do my 400 te's with the bushing removal and bearing upgrade. He even called and gave me pointers on little things I could do to keep the reels running in tip top shape. He a busy guy but he does a hellava job. He may also find something the average fella wouldn't catch.

Hey Pikemaster or anyone who knows

If i was to change out the drag washers on my calcutta b with the carbon fiber ones, do you recommend greasing them? I was just looking around the internet and found mixed answers on that.

Also, if you recommend it, is there a grease i could pick up at the hardware store that would work?

Thanks, Pat

Pat: Good ??? I always grease Carbontex washers with a very light coat of Cal's Drag Grease, it will make them smmother on startup and waterproof them. But if are looking for Top End Lock/Down stoping power then install them dry. There is only 2 Drag greases that I know of 1 is Shimano Drag grease and Cal's Drag grease, DO NOT USE REEL GREASE on any drag washers it will make them very jerky. I get all my Carbontex drag kits and Cal's grease from Dawn from SMOOTH DRAGS 1-888-206-4656

My advice would be, if you are not really interested in investing some time,(AND THE RIGHT TOOLS), send it to Pikemaster.

On the other hand,if you want try this at home, It's a very pleasent and calming hobby. As mentioned above, at Alantani.com you will find all the tutorials you need to get started. Begin with the ABU, it's an easy reel to work on, and demands a minimum of tools. Actually can compleatly take it appart, just using the multitool than came with it, and a pincet. That's the reason, I call it the Kalashnikov of the multipliers.

Your AVID on the other hand, is a little more tricky, especially if you want to do a compleate overhaul of it.

There are no tutors on the AVID's itself, but you can use the tutorial from the DAIWA Luna(Pikemaster pls correct me if I am wrong)

I took my little brother fishing one day and let him use my Okuma Akena 400. He got some pike slime on it and decided to clean it by dipping the whole thing in the lake. Needless to say it hasnt been working great. I took it apart and cleaned as best I could but really had no clue what I was doing. Now it usually works good for a few casts then while your reeling it makes sort of a grinding sound and the drag doesnt seem to go as tight as it used to. Is this reel salvagable?

WI - you've probably got grease and or oil on the drag washers. (those sit on the post that the handle/AR bearing screws onto) Unless you've kept using it this way for a long time, a simple cleaning should do the trick. I had this exact same issue with my 975, after having to wash it off in the lake a few times to remove all the blood. (long stupid story) The grinding is another story... Clean the main drive gear and pinion gear, and grease. That may solve the problem. Dunking in the lake basically takes all the oil/grease/dirt that's inside the reel and spreads it evenly throughout the inside of the reel. That's when thumb bars start sticking, drags stop working, spools start screeching, etc.

First thing I'd do is take the reel apart and clean the drag washers, and wipe them until they are clean and dry. I always flip the fiber washers over when reassembling, or even change them around. Not sure that does anything at all, but it makes me feel better, and my drags have yet to fail. I've had to replace a few gears over the years, but parts are cheap. I'm sure PikeMaster is light years ahead of me on this stuff, but I like doing it myself. It's saved me more than a few times on trips when a reel starts messing up, and I can tear it down on the boat and deal with it instead of throwing it in a bucket and not having that reel for a week.

Yes it is.

Regarding the grinding feeling, you probably have a rusty pinion bearing. The same thing happened to me once, after a trip. As funny as I might sound, this caused a grinding feeling when reeling the Akena 400.

Take a look at the end of this tread,
