Just bought the twisted tubes in then off season so haven't tried em yet, they look deadly.
Twisted tubes are awesum. Not as much side to side action, but the tail makes up for that. Just like the dogs you can "weld" the tails back on when they get ripped off.

| My favorite would be James super D in orange walleye. Have also done allot of good with the black one as well. They work just as well as the high dollar ones and for me personally they hold up allot better. James is also a great guy to do business with. |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I'm certainly not going to say that I don't like other baits out there like the Medussa and the Super D but when it's crunch time I reach for the bait that has accounted for more 50"+ for me in the last ten years - BULLDAWG. |

Location: Hayward, WI | For a hybrid my favorite is the H20 Tackle Hardhead. They have a solid plastic head with a rubber Kalins tail that threads on. They account for a lot of fish in my boat.
For all rubber baits I use Bulldawgs, Super D's and Curly Sues. Super D's work and hold up well at an excellent price point. Shack Attack Curly Sues are amazingly durable and catch fish. Good price for the durability. Bulldawgs are middle ground. They hold up ok at an ok price point but have been a pretty solid bait for me the last few years since improving the internal harness and rubber. |

| You see alot people liking the hardhead? Is this lure just popular cause it has a hard body and probably lasts longer than some others or does it simply catch more fish than other plastics? What is different about the hardhead vs a bulldog other than it might last longer w/ hard plastic. |

The hard body and cheaper replacement tails is a bonus, but I would still use them if they held up similarly to regular all rubber baits.
The benefits I see to the hardhead:
Action - The Hardhead and Buckethead have a wobble/belly roll both on the pull and the pause/drop. I think the side to side belly roll on the drop is a great trigger on these baits.
Versatility: They have 2 threaded weight inserts. These can be weighted to give the bait a more level, or more nose down drop and also allow you to work it unweighted near the surface or heavily weighted to work as deep as you want. Can also weight them heavy to work them very fast yet shallower as well, or lighter to work very slowly but deeper. Screwing the tail on so it points up or down changes the working depth as well as the action also.
Hooking efficiency: The hard bodied bait does a great job of hooking fish. The hits are usually hard, and it's a surprise when a fish gets off. Most fish that hit these baits end up in my net.
I consider it a side benefit, but the durability is a bonus too. I still have my original wood hardhead I got probably 4 years ago. I think I've put maybe 4 new tails on it at about $3 each.
I do still throw some rubber baits from time to time, but my Hardheads see a lot of time in the water and account for probably 1/2 of the total fish I catch each year.

Location: Central Wisconsin | I have yet to use one, but at the Wausau Musky Expo the bait maker showed me a hard head that had 44 fish on it, and only on it's third tail. Pretty impressive! I can't wait to start catching fish on mine. |

Every thing Tucker said! It boats as many fish in my baot as what the Mag dawg did, and sometimes I think I get more than I may have on a poarticular day with a dawg. Aside from a much better hooking bait the versatility of the hardhead is unmatched by any other rubber bait. Tucker mentioned the weight inserts for allowing you to change the drop rate, as well as the way the bait drops (nose down, level, etc...). Then you have the option of running it with a tail up poisition to get an awesome bait wobble on the retrieve as well as a slower drop (I run this in cold water conitions), or run it tail down for little wobble on the retrieve and a drop more like a mag dawg when the water is warmer. If you want to go Howie Meyer style with paddletail type baits over deep humps just unscrew the curly tail, and screw on a paddletail which H20 also offers.
Want to run various color variations without having to buy multiple baits? Simple enough by again unscrewing tails. You can now run a color scheme like all black, black with orange tail, black with glow tail, or black with gold tail all by just changing a tail.
Durability is unmatch. Versatility is unmatched. Fishability is unmatched. Fish catching ability is right there with all the other popular ones. |
