When I took my boat to get it winterized this year, the mechanic said I had water/sludge in my plastic gas tank, gas lines and in the carberator. I told him that I had trouble starting it during the past season and that is what prompted him to find it. I use marine stabil in every tank of gas with the synthetic oil recommended by the manufacturer. I mix my gas in a 5 gallon plastic can and then put it in the boat when I need it. This is a small 2 stroke outboard. Are there any other treatments that need to be used to prevent this from happening? The mechanic didn't give any other suggestions for any other fuel treatments.

I don't know about the states but in Ontario Hi Test gas dosen't contain ethanol and is worth the slight extra cost there are also water seperating filters available

Same here and I had been using sea foam with every fill up. Switched to Johnson-Evinrude 2+4 Fuel Conditioner (recommended by mechanic). So far, so good.

Hiya,

When I was running smaller tanks, I would always dump out the remaining fuel at the end of the season and throw it in the truck, then leave the cap off so any remaining fuel would evaporate.

If the fuel is used regularly, water should not be an issue, but it never hurts with seafoam. That is some good stuff.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been using high test gas but the boat did sit a lot last year. Is there a particular kind of sea foam (marine grade?) that I should use or is it all the same?

Sea foam in the can...it will be all you need. It's not cheap, though. Last time I noticed it was above $6 for a 16 oz can.

You should use ONLY Johnson/Evinrude 2 + 4. It does not have alcohol in it like Stabil and others that break down your engine! Remember gasoline will start breaking down siting around after 2 months or so keep that in mind!No fogging with 2+4 used regularly. You must follow mix ratios exactly.I figured a little more the merryer. Not true. Trust me Mercury and all other guys. This come from a Top A1 plus Engine mechanic and person who helped developed engines for Mercury and BRP over the years. Dave just retired last Friday!I was once a engine dummy and Dave has taught me so much about motors and who and how their built it's amazing. There is some much that the average joe don,t know.Small Merc,s are really Yammy and Dihatsu,s with Merc Cowling. Verado best built motor as of now. The best motor for any given boat is not by brand but by HP.If anybody tells you buy a certain brand he does,nt know what he's talking about as engine dynamics change as there HP size goes up.I asked Dave what engine to buy and he said Gman what HP. Good Luck All.

I run the Yamaha ring free in my Yamaha outboard motors and sporadically run the seafoam in everything else during the season and then the last tank of the year in my tow vehicle and lawnmowers/equipment etc.

Hey Todd,
they usually have it at Farm and Fleet in Woodstock if you're ever up this way... guessing you drive close by it a few times during the summer

Todd, they have it at most auto parts stores. I even found it in the automotive aisle at Jewel, Home Depot and Wallyworld. Let me know if you come up empty - I can bring a can to the banquet. Got a few out in the garage. I use ot for lawn mpwers and my snowblower, which looks like I won't be needing this year!

Dude....of all of the things I know you could score, are you gonna tell me you can't find Seafoam?

Like esoxaddict, I can get some 150 yards from my store here on 31 at AutoZone.
I can hook you up with the good stuff for the Greg Thomas seminar.....let me know.
It's the best...

I use a cocktail of Seafoam and Marine Stabil in every tank. Overkill ? Maybe, but it works pretty darn good.

The last time I bought Seafoam I got it at Home Depot.

Well the weather just took a poo where I was going fishing this weekend I will embark upon a seafoam crusade. I just had my chain meal cleaned and polished and some scroll work on the old helmet. Ready to go.
