Okay you guys who consider yourselves good Jig and Tube fisherman, are you letting the fish eat the bait and swim away or are you setting the hook on first contact. I have had trouble while muskie fishing trying to hammer the fish immediatly upon contact, I consider myself pretty good bass fishing with jigs and tubes and have the patience to feel them swim away. If you consider fishing with Jigs and tubes as one of your go to methods, maybe give us itchy trigger types some advice. Thanks

Jigging is by far my favorite style of fishing for any fish so I guess I can call myself a self-proclaimed expert. :)  I vertical jig Bondy Baits & Red October tubes a lot in the Detroit & St. Clair Rivers. Muskies hit them hard (unless they hit at the top of your jig stroke so you don’t feel them that much) & you have to set the hook right away else you probably won't get them in the boat. I use a heavy action rod (8' & a 9') with a little bit of give in the tip. The give in the tip of the rod helps keep tension on the fish & keeps it pinned. I tried using my 9' TI X-heavy rod but I lost too many fish because I was pulling the bait out of their mouths. I also used my 9' TI Med-heavy rod & that work decent but I didn't get the hooks in as good as I did with the heavy rod.

For casting tubes I like the med heavy & heavy rod for the same reason above. I also set the hook right away as well.

I catch the majority of my muskies on jigs. Got my biggest fish to date, a 51" on a jig - I'm usually throwing a cobra esox and then some type of flat plastic, like an eel tail (haven't done too much with tubes yet). Mann's Jellyhoo was my go to rigged flat but I haven't been able to find them for quite some time, must have stopped making them. I have found no matter how I fish them, slow or fast, the fish always smack them hard enough for an immediate hook set.

@steve
Are you still fishing these on 17lb mono with a spinning reel?

just read Steve's article for the first time, and what he does is nearly exactly how i fish jigs, except i use a bass flippin stick with a soft tip and 40lb braid, i tried my 8'6" heavy action rod for a while and missed more than i hooked

I liked the 8' heavy until the tip guide spit in half at the end of this past season. I'm thinking about replacing it with a 8'6" Mojo or Okuma heavy. I'd like to get a St. Croix Legend but with the number of snags I get in the river I'd rather not buy the higher end musky rods for jigging (except walleye rods).

I know for my Tubby Tubes they get T-boned hard and about 80% of the time right on the head. Just my opinion but regardless of the tube brand(s) you buy, put an extra hook on the nose of the lures. My Tubby Tubes have a hook that is almost on the head and I think Red October tubes have a sweet setup too with some of their harness systems (See below picture). Easy to modify any tube though to increase your hook up %. Set that hook fast and hard!

If you plan on being at the Milwaukee, Wausau or Madison show this year stop by my booth and take a look.

LOL- Guest crack's me up! Not even duct tape, can solve his problem.

Nice to see all the "innovations" in tube style baits and rigging. I guess the Alien changed some folks perspective about tubes or tube style baits and rigging them? A 9" hot pink fluorescent 9" Alien is still my number 1 lure. It's hard to beat a squid body design for gliding, especially if the glide ends in the "eat me move", those moving tentacles are tantalizing.

"Al, I've never seen anyone work a lure like that" : Todd Forcier some years back fishing the "Petenwell Last Day of November Muskie Challenge". I was throwing a Alien. Really a last day of the season get together of MF member's. Todd will not be forgotten as he sacrificed his keel guard as the lead "icebreaker" so the group member's boats could make it to Devils Elbow for sustenance.

Bondy has also proved to the community that fishing rubber deep can payoff big! Ssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh!

Have fun!
Al

Sworral:

Have you ever used your system in Milfoil? If yes, any changes to how you execute the retrieve? I tried something similar this year with Saltwater Jigheads and shad bodies, but I just didn't have confidence in it. I have a friend who did much better on it though, but i do not think he was doing what you described in your article.

Yes, I fish milfoil quite a bit. I fish the edges and pockets with a jig I make myself. I bend the hook, a 5/0, so I can rig the plastic weedless and punch the hook through on a hookset.

I work the jig pretty fast using the reel. When I get to the edge I let it fall. It works.

Sworrall, do you use crimps or a knot for the 60lb seven-strand wire? I am switching to wire for my jig setup and would prefer to use seven-strand with a knot... but want to find a reliable knot with a loop at the end.

I use sleeves crimped with linesman pliers. Never a failure.

Can you make a video of you fishing this way this coming summer? I tried your method and have failed miserably. I gotta be doing something wrong. Maybe seeing you boat a fish with this tactic would boost the confidence a little.
