Instead of respooling my reels ro 50-65lb's to work rattletraps and small cranks can I just put like 6-12' of the smaller line on the end of my 80ld line to give the small lures better action?

Trust your uni knots?

I would have no problem trusting my uni-knots but I would be afraid of casting the knot through my guides and causing the mother of all backlashes if it stuck on a guide!

I would worry more about the leader in terms of getting action on a small lure.  If you can cast far enough with the lighter baits than keep it,

Don't even try it,... I've been fishing Cave Run every spring for 8 yrs and have hooked into a few Heavy Girls that would have gotten away if trying what you want to do......

Instead why not dedicate 1 or 2 reels with 50lb. test line so your rattle baits have the most action without compromising your tackle?.

The "captain of the Seabrooke" does it differently too!

Some priceless advice for rattlebait fishing has been offered in a few of these threads now that if taken will surely result in more consistency. If not...fair enough.

A 9 1/2' foot xxh predator with a Tranx mounted on it, spooled with 100lbs power pro and a 200lbs. floro leader with snaps and ball bearings connected to a 1 1/2 oz
rattlebait will catch fish...so will a cornish hen apparently.

Here is a knotless leader video posted on another thread. It isn't something you can easily change on the water though.

A 105lb single strand leader works well with smaller baits. BR

If you can't dedicate a reel specifically for rattle baits do this: Reel your 80lb line onto a spare reel/or spool...then re spool with 50lb braid. When you are done with rattle baits for the year wind the 50lb back on the spool or spare reel and save for next spring. Then re-spool the 80lb and you are good to go for throwing the big stuff. No wasted line this way.

BTW- I would trust a well tied uni knot over a lot of the terminal tackle that I have seen folks use.
