Location: minnesota | I'm starting to plan out my trips for this coming season and was wondering what the muskie fishing is usually like on lotw at opener? Typically I go up mid July but this year I have enough time off I can go up a couple times. So is that first week a good choice? |

A lot depends on water temperatures, and that is very hard to predict at this time. Lately with the early ice out and warm springs the early season has been good, but that changes from year to year. By the end of April it will be easier to tell, as at least some of the early success depends on when the ice goes off.

Location: Cave Run Lake KY. | With the sesson starting the 2nd weekend of June this means this year you get a early opener the 8th of June if the first weekend was on a monday it whould be 12 days later That being said with a early ice out on Lake of the woods And lake Kakagi should have Big fish on all the sunney shore's in big bays. I think I whould allso consider Whitfish Bay for this year"s opener as this whould be one of the few times you can find big fish on Whitfish Bay. Book into Vick@Dot's and head north to Bell Island and fish all the good looking shore lines on the south end of Bell. Good Fishing to you . Marv. |

Location: Cave Run Lake KY. | Is it the 3rd. week end in June , if so then That makes it The 15th of June. for some reason I was thinking the 2nd weekend, anyway it's the early'st that you can fish Muskies on LOW.S. Now days I don't get to LOW till Aug or Sept. Just ending up Guiding down here in June. Good Fishing to you Marv. |

| 15th is correct. If you enjoy fishing weeds, fish the opener - finding fish is generally very straight forward - IMO. Early Ice out sometimes messes me up.. was so early last year with quick warm up, that fish were all ready on some main lake stuff, just took a couple of days to adapt. |

Location: Warroad, Mn | If you get a fairly late iceout, then sight fishing in the trout waters of the LOTWs (and Crow) is very interesting.

Location: minnesota | Sounds like I might as well give it a shot! At a minimum it'll be a different experience for me! How's the pike and smallmouth that time of year? |

Location: Warroad, Mn | Smallies are usually still shallow and are great! Small spinnerbaits will catch both smallies and muskies (and most every thing that swims, bring a cooler for a walleye or two). Use a short steel leader to prevent bite offs.

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | for comparison's sake I went up last year on June 23rd, first June trip to Canada in years....I remember Doug posting a report the day before I got there that the fish had started showing up on rocks..The first 3 days that's exactly what we found, then kinda like a light switch they were gone from a lot of the spots and we did better on more "traditional" June stuff ( weeds, grass, wood, sandy bays). We saw a TON of fish ( more so then trips in July, August, and Sept), and boated enough, but a lot of lookers, nippers, close calls..more so then what you will find the other times of the year. Take a look at the past Operation Muskie results the last few years as they usually go up right after the opener. Numbers are usually fine it seems but the size of caught fish can be sub par for LOTW standards. Overall I had a great time though, there's something awesome about being able to fish until 1030 and still have light. I wouldn't hesitate to go again

Location: Cave Run Lake KY. | Doug is right on I had it bass ackwerd in my first post It's late ice with a early opener can get you some very interesting sight fishing. on Crow we had fish swiming back and forth on the shore line. We would fish Crow for about 3 days and when the fish went deep we would head over to a boat launch on Stevens Bay and fish the north shore of Sabaskong bay we could stay on fish the rest of the trip . Location: minnesota | Thanks for the info guys. Maybe I can convince my work to let me take all my vacation at once and then I'll just spend all summer up there. Somehow I doubt they'll go for that... |
