Posts: 131 Location: Ottawa, Ont | Hey guess this is probably an ongoing topic as fly fishing for muskies has started to become more and more popular; like there not hard enough to catch. I am looking for some expertise on this topic as I am interested in fly fishing for them this coming season. I know that I want a 10WT rod and obviously 10 WT line, but I am unsure of leader weights and reels. I was wondering if anyone out there could give me their expertise on this subject, and give me some recommendations for reels and also leader material/weight. I will also be in the market for some flys so please PM me thanks. Alex

Posts: 1060 Location: Palm Coast, FL | Alex...get the book Muskie on the Fly by Robert Tommes...a must have for any musky fly angler! Also, just because you get a 10 wt. rod doesn't mean you have to use 10 wt. line! Many times with the larger flies it is better to go one weight heavier. Yes, Jeff will hook you up with some flies for sure and give good advice too!

Yep Jeff can get you set up. He did a story in the Dec/Jan Musky Hunter on fly fishing for skies as well.

Alex, Talk to Hedrik at the next MCI meeting. He got a set-up this year for chasing muskies in the Rideau. Float, Paddle, and Fly in Bells Corners can answer a lot of your questions, too. They had some larger pike flies which will probably work in the downtown reach of Rideau or the Jock.

I have a 9wt, wish I had a 10 or 11.

Posts: 131 Location: Ottawa, Ont | Thats amazing! way to go Jeff and thanks for the post muskihntr. Jeff I have fly casted for steel head for about 4 years now, this will be my first season for muskie on the fly. I useally fish river systems with slow to medium flow current. targeting large weed edges and sharp break lines mainly focusing on water depths of about 3-8 ft.

They can teach you a ton about fishing both lakes and rivers. Jeff has helped me out a bunch as well via emails and PMs.
